SUMMARY:Free Virtual Screening of the Film "Recollection" by Palestinian Director Kamal Aljafari
DESCRIPTION:To register for this event please click here. \nTo view the film trailer please click here. \nThe following description is by Shimrit Lee writing for Warscapes.com \nAbout the Film \n\n\n\n\nKamal Aljafari remembers when Jaffa was transformed into civil war-torn Beirut. Under the direction of Menachem Golan\, the production team of The Delta Force (1986) created urban mayhem\, arranging for the explosion of real buildings in the staging of a fictional battle. Aljafari recalls standing on the side of the road with a group of other children\, eagerly awaiting a glimpse of Chuck Norris racing by in a van with the name of their school\, “St. Joseph\,” printed on the door. Years later\, while flipping through television channels in a hotel room in London\, Aljafari was shocked to recognize this scene. He sat on the bed mesmerized\, not by the action shots but by the background: a clear documentation of the Jaffa of his childhood\, a city which has since been destroyed\, renovated\, gentrified and rebuilt beyond recognition. \nAljafari’s latest film Recollection is composed entirely of footage from Israeli and American fiction features shot in Jaffa from the 1960s to the 1990s\, primarily of the so-called bourekas genre that dramatized tense romantic relationships between Mizrahi male “thugs” and Ashkenazi female elites. Jaffa provided the perfect setting to construct new Israeli narratives on top of emptied Palestinian ruins. As Aljafari explains\, Palestinians were effectively “uprooted in reality and in fiction.” In Recollection\, Aljafari removes the Israeli actors to give the stage to the people who appear by chance in the background of these shots\, including both Palestinians and Iraqi Jews who were settled in the city\, enacting what he describes as “cinematic justice.” \nAljafari was born in neighboring Ramle in 1972 and later emigrated to Germany to attend film school. His previous films include The Roof (2006)\, which follows him on a return visit to the homes of his parents and grandmother in Palestine\, and Port of Memory (2009)\, which traces the eviction of his mother’s family from their home in Ajami. Aljafari’s dark humor and silent communication style liken his work to that of Palestinian filmmakers Elia Sulieman and Michel Khleifi. \nUnlike his previous films\, Recollection has no central protagonist. Aljafari moves through the found-footage\, creating the illusion of a dreamer sleep-walking through the city with a handheld camera. While Aljafari sometimes describes this unseen cameraman as himself\, each excavated memory is shared\, belonging to his grandfather\, his mother\, his neighbors\, and others who cannot return. Each footstep holds a certain urgency; as Aljafari explains\, “I walk everywhere\, sometimes hesitant and sometimes lost. I wander through the city; I wander through the memories. I film everything I encounter because I know it no longer exists. I return to a lost time.”

SUMMARY:Mdou Moctar at the Crocodile
DESCRIPTION:Mdou Moctar immediately stands out as one of the most innovative artists in contemporary Saharan music. His unconventional interpretations of Tuareg guitar and have pushed him to the forefront of a crowded scene. Back home\, he’s celebrated for his original compositions and verbose poetry\, an original creator in a genre defined by cover bands. In the exterior\, where Saharan rock has become one of the continents biggest musical exports\, he’s earned a name for himself with his guitar moves. Mdou shreds with a relentless and frenetic energy that puts his contemporaries to shame.

SUMMARY:Tinariwen at the Showbox
DESCRIPTION:The best Tinariwen album hasn’t been recorded yet. Perhaps it never will be. Because the best Tinariwen music isn’t the music they perform in front of microphones. It’s the music they play at night around the fire\, back in their own country\, amongst themselves and at their own pace. Having eaten\, and drunk their tea\, the men bring out their guitars\, chat\, remember old songs and let the music come. In those moments\, the music can become like the fire\, free\, magical and impossible to stuff into a box. It rises up like a shower of sparks or a state of grace\, without premeditation; the momentary manifestation of a friendship\, a community\, an environment\, a history; the revelatory connection with something that belongs only to them\, and goes beyond them. Their discography stretching out over the last 17 years\, all the tours and the international recognition have changed nothing: Tinariwen are still a desert band\, only certain aspects of which the western music industry can ever hope to capture and present. Tinariwen existed long before any of their albums were recorded\, and they still exist quite distinct from their discographic dimension. So\, the best Tinariwen album doesn’t exist. But it’s still worth trying to go and find it.

SUMMARY:Queen Naija: The Butterfly Tour (Portland)
DESCRIPTION:With the recent arrival of her debut album missunderstood\, Atlanta-based singer/songwriter Queen Naija has cemented her status as one of R&B’s most compelling young stars. Hailed as “the first soul star of the social media generation” by The New York Times\, the 25-year-old Detroit native has amassed over three billion combined global streams to date\, each song showcasing the powerful vocal skills she first developed by singing in church. Although she initially found fame through a YouTube channel launched with her former husband\, Queen struck out on her own with her breakthrough single “Medicine”: a January 2018 release that debuted at No. 45 on the Billboard Hot 100 (a nearly-unheard-of achievement for an unsigned artist)\, and quickly landed her a deal with Capitol Records. By summer 2018\, she’d delivered a critically acclaimed self-titled EP\, which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Emerging Artists chart and earned major recognition in the 2019 awards season (including nominations for Top R&B Artist at the Billboard Music Awards and Best New Artist at the BET Awards\, in addition to three nods at the iHeartRadio Music Awards).

SUMMARY:Antonio Rey - Flamenco Guitar Master from Spain with Seffarine
DESCRIPTION:Flamenco Guitar virtuoso from Spain\, Antonio Rey makes his Seattle debut after winning the 2020 Latin Grammy for best flamenco album \nSeffarine’s international blend of sounds features soulful Moroccan singer Lamiae Naki and flamenco guitarist Nat Hulskamp. Their music embraces and extends Naki’s rich heritage\, which spans from Moorish Spain to the Sahara\, by mixing Arabic Andalusi music with Manuel Gutierrez’s explosive flamenco footwork\, the grooves of acclaimed bassist Damian Erskine and the exotic instrumentation of Persian master multi-instrumentalist Bobak Salehi. These diverse backgrounds meld into an intoxicating blend of ancient and modern that Bass Player Magazine describes as a “gorgeous intersection of Spanish flamenco\, Arabic and Andalusian music\, Persian classical\, and jazz”. \nSeffarine takes its name from the ancient metalworking square in Lamiae’s home city of Fes\, Morocco. Her family is well known in the Seffarine as master metalworkers continuing the tradition today. The square dates back to the 9th century and is famous for the complex rhythms that can be heard from the blacksmiths’ hammers.

SUMMARY:Barboza Presents: Habibi
DESCRIPTION:As the world starts to re-emerge and awaken\, the summer of 2021 proved to be a hot one and Habibi is ready to dance. After being coined by the New Yorker as having “the Colgate white glisten of sixties girl group pop combined with an uncensored edge” for their acclaimed debut album\, Habibi broke boundaries by introducing Farsi-sung tunes on their EP ‘Cardamom Garden’ that “shed rigid definitions of what constitutes American music” (Pitchfork). In 2020\, a month before the world drastically changed\, ‘Anywhere But Here’\, the group’s prophetic sophomore album was released which led NPR’s Robin Hilton to call them a “noir girl-group.” \nThis fall\, Habibi will release a two-song EP of original compositions\, titled ‘Somewhere’ to inaugurate their signing to the legendary label Kill Rock Stars. The EP will move the unique four- piece’s sound into the escapism of disco club era New York City\, an expansion upon their Detroit-bred garage roots. Habibi knows it’s time to cut loose and take you to the dance floor\, enlisting producer Mike Stroud from Ratatat and Heba Kadry (Egyptian) as mastering engineer. Fans of the Tom Tom Club and ESG will find here plenty to love.

SUMMARY:Donia Jarrar + Friends wsg Huda Asfour
DESCRIPTION:Donia Jarrar + Friends wsg Huda Asfour\n8 p.m. ET Saturday\, June 25\, 2022\nIn-person at The Annex @ AANM OR Virtual Livestream\n$12 Museum Members | $10 Students | $15 General Public | $5 Livestream \nJoin artist-in-residence Donia Jarrar for the premiere of her new evening-length work\, BUTCHER\, produced during her residency\, and featuring poet and writer Yasmine Rukia\, and dancers Ava Ansari and Zaza. Huda Asfour will open the concert with her signature solo oud improvisations. There will also be a talkback with the artists after the show. \nBUTCHER is a loosely autobiographical concept album based on Jarrar’s own experiences with domestic and intimate partner violence and sexual assault\, in which she takes on the persona of a vigilante and antihero doling out punishments through the power wielded to her via a sonic cleaver. Jarrar is not interested in playing nice. Rather\, she aims to explore what is possible when women\, non-binary people and queers of all genders defy\, disrupt and destroy the patriarchy through violent means and without mercy\, drawing inspiration from horror\, science-fiction and the erotic. \nCONTENT WARNING: This performance includes sensitive content on domestic violence\, sexual assault\, physical violence\, identity-based racial discrimination and harassment. There will also be the use of prop swords\, knives and cleavers and other edged and bladed weapons. While this performance is meant to be a healing space for survivors\, the artist acknowledges that this content may be difficult for some audience members.

SUMMARY:The Crocodile Presents: Bombino\, Yogoman
DESCRIPTION:Four thousand years of living in a hostile environment taught the Tuareg that the will to survive with dignity intact is stronger than any external threat.  Bombino puts that sentiment to music\, writes its anthem\, and gives it a life of its own. He is known as being emblematic of the next generation of Tuareg\, a new voice of the Sahara and Sahel\, fusing traditional Berber rhythms with the energy of rock and roll and songs about peace. After years of drought\, rebellion\, and tyranny\, Bombino extols his audience to remember who they are\, but also realize who they can be. \n— \nBombino’s life and travels have exposed him to the problems facing his people. He has taken on the mission of helping the Tuareg community achieve equal rights\, peace\, maintain their rich cultural heritage and promote education. He is an advocate for teaching children the Tuareg language of Tamasheq\, the local Haoussa language as well as French and Arabic\, all of which he speaks fluently.  “We fought for our rights\,” remarks Bombino\, “but we have seen that guns are not the solution. We need to change our system. Our children must go to school and learn about their Tuareg identity.”
