SUMMARY:A Winter's Evening of Music\, Poetry and Storytelling: From Struggle to Survival: Creating Beauty Out of Tragedy
DESCRIPTION:From Struggle to Survival: Creating Beauty Out of Tragedy\nA Winter’s Evening of Music\, Poetry and Storytelling with Claudia Castro Luna\, Michelle Dodson\, Hilary Field\, Merna Ann Hecht & Lena Khalaf Tuffaha. \nWeaving together original music and poetry\, classical guitarist and composer Hilary Field with poets Claudia Castro Luna and Lena Khalaf Tuffaha will share poems about struggle and their means to survive. Storyteller Merna Ann Hecht and cellist Michelle Dodson will offer stories and music with the theme of bringing hope forth in dark times with a selection little known traditional and contemporary stories. Through music and spoken word\, these writers and musicians share the nuanced beauty and vulnerability that can be found in our hearts at times of sorrow and difficulty as in times of joy\, this heightened taking place as it does on the day that commemorates the life\, work\, and example of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. \nThis event is supported by a generous grant from the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture.

SUMMARY:Marc Ribot and Gordon Grdina's Haram at Town Hall
DESCRIPTION:Guitar legend Marc Ribot has released 25 albums over a 40-year career. As part of Town Hall’s Global Rhythms series\, Ribot takes the stage alongside Vancouver’s culture-blending band Haram\, whose work draws inspiration from legendary Egyptian singer Umm Kulthoum. Together they create a new sonically breathtaking view of time-tested repertoire. \nRibot is joined onstage by Haram\, a Vancouver-based group led by Juno Award-winning oud virtuoso and guitarist Gordon Grdina. Haram filters Arabic music through the creative lens of improvisation\, paying homage to the masters while still freely developing an original voice. Classics from Farid El Atrache\, Oum Khalsoum\, Iraqi folk songs\, and 50’s Sudanese radio music all resonate and inspire the ensemble to dig deeper and give more freely. Listen in for a double-billed performance showcase as Ribot teams up with Haram to navigate Arabic musical traditions.

SUMMARY:Tamino with Matt Holubowski at Barboza
DESCRIPTION:Tamino with Matt Holubowski\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTamino Biography: \nOf Belgian\, Egyptian and Lebanese heritage the 21-year-old musician has written and shaped an album of startling\, visceral\, sit-up-and-listen power. “Amir” features a handful of tracks from his debut EP\, “Habibi” including Indigo Night which features Radiohead’s Colin Greenwood on bass guitar. Although the majority of the playing heard on “Amir” is Tamino himself\, he is joined by a collective of Arabic musicians based in Brussels called “Nagham Zikrayat”. The Firka (orchestra) is predominantly made up of professional musicians from the Middle East\, most of which have refugee status having predominantly fled from Iraq and Syria. \nOver the course of “Amir”\, Tamino captures a range of emotions from romance to desolation\, and almost everything in between. It’s mood music\, painted in a number of different shades. \nTamino: “Some of the songs on “Amir” are more on the romantic side\, whilst others are more on the apathetic side. In my own life\, I can look at the world and at life in both ways depending on my state of being. The conflict creates an imbalance. “Amir” is about balance” \n\n\nAge Restrictions:  21 and over only \nImportant Notice:  All tickets are nonrefundable and nontransferable with the exception of event cancellation. Support acts are subject to change. \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Cancelled: Crescendo at SIFF
DESCRIPTION:This event has been cancelled! \nAs part of a peace summit\, a world-famous German conductor (Peter Simonischek; THE INTERPRETER\, SJFF 2019) creates an orchestra of specially chosen Israeli and Palestinian youth musicians. But can music overcome the feelings of mistrust and suspicion striking chords and shrill notes onstage and off? It takes all the conductor’s skill and resources—and divulging his own tragic story—to overcome the discord and teach them how to achieve harmony\, leading to a tense and emotional finale. \nAcademy Award-nominated director Dror Zahavi has united an impressive supporting cast of Israeli and Palestinian non-actors playing the students into a convincing ensemble\, who fight\, argue\, laugh\, and make music together in this dramatic\, humanist hymn about forgiveness\, reconciliation\, and the astounding power of music. \nWinner of the 2019 Audience Prize at the Festival of German Film. \nDror Zahavi | Drama | Germany\, Israel\, Italy | 2019 | English\, German w/English subtitles | 112m \nRating: PG-13 \nSpecial Guest Intro and performance by Bram Schenck\, principal clarinetist for Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra and member of the National Youth Orchestra

SUMMARY:Queen Naija at Marymoor Park
DESCRIPTION:As a little girl growing up outside Detroit\, Queen Naija started singing in church at the age of three and writing her own songs in third grade. Although she kept up with her singing and songwriting as she got older—and even cut a few records in a local studio—her focus shifted when she and her former husband found fame online with their wildly popular YouTube channel. But when their marriage fell apart last year\, Queen returned to her lifelong passion and released a powerfully unapologetic single that shares her side of the story.

SUMMARY:Seffarine: Edmonds City Park Concert
DESCRIPTION:Seffarine’s international blend of sounds features soulful Moroccan singer Lamiae Naki and flamenco guitarist Nat Hulskamp. Their music embraces and extends Naki’s rich heritage\, which spans from Moorish Spain to the Sahara\, by mixing Arabic Andalusi music with Manuel Gutierrez’s explosive flamenco footwork\, the grooves of acclaimed bassist Damian Erskine and the exotic instrumentation of Persian master multi-instrumentalist Bobak Salehi. These diverse backgrounds meld into an intoxicating blend of ancient and modern that Bass Player Magazine describes as a “gorgeous intersection of Spanish flamenco\, Arabic and Andalusian music\, Persian classical\, and jazz”. \n\nSeffarine takes its name from the ancient metalworking square in Lamiae’s home city of Fes\, Morocco. Her family is well known in the Seffarine as master metalworkers continuing the tradition today. The square dates back to the 9th century and is famous for the complex rhythms that can be heard from the blacksmiths’ hammers.
