SUMMARY:Bombino w/ Publish the Quest and other guests at Nectar Lounge
DESCRIPTION:Four thousand years of living in a hostile environment taught the Tuareg that the will to survive with dignity intact is stronger than any external threat.  Bombino puts that sentiment to music\, writes its anthem\, and gives it a life of its own. He is known as being emblematic of the next generation of Tuareg\, a new voice of the Sahara and Sahel\, fusing traditional Berber rhythms with the energy of rock and roll and songs about peace. After years of drought\, rebellion\, and tyranny\, Bombino extols his audience to remember who they are\, but also realize who they can be. \n— \nBombino’s life and travels have exposed him to the problems facing his people. He has taken on the mission of helping the Tuareg community achieve equal rights\, peace\, maintain their rich cultural heritage and promote education. He is an advocate for teaching children the Tuareg language of Tamasheq\, the local Haoussa language as well as French and Arabic\, all of which he speaks fluently.  “We fought for our rights\,” remarks Bombino\, “but we have seen that guns are not the solution. We need to change our system. Our children must go to school and learn about their Tuareg identity.”

SUMMARY:Mitchum Yacoub and the Brass Empire
DESCRIPTION:Mitchum Yacoub an Egyptian-American multi-instrumentalist\, producer\, and DJ based out of\nSan Diego\, CA. As a lifelong drummer that has supported many projects in the vein of Afrobeat\,\nSoul\, Funk\, and Reggae\, he’s been slow-brewing a unique feel for roots and dance music.\nInspired by artists like Fela Kuti\, Dr. Dre\, and James Brown\, his music harkens back to Africa in\nthe 70’s with the bass and drums turned up a notch. Strong\, repetitive grooves layered with\nAfro-Latin percussion and vibrant\, tightly executed horn lines that call all dancers to the floor.\nSince beginning his first live performances in late 2019\, Yacoub has played alongside roots\nmusic heavies like The Wailers\, Antibalas\, Jungle Fire\, and Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto. In\n2022\, his group supported Seun Kuti for six shows across the U.S.\, while he traded on\npercussion and drum kit for Kuti’s band: Egypt 80 (formerly of Fela Kuti). The experience trained\nhim well in the rhythmic strength of the music and earned him and his band a place in the global\nscene of Afrobeat. Originality\, musicianship\, and a massive sound are three marks keeping\nYacoub’s band on the road and a fast-growing festival favorite. The highly acclaimed release of\nhis debut album\, “Living High in the Brass Empire”\, (2023 All-Town Sound) brings the\nexperience home as a showcase in his unique approach to roots music; forming explosive\nintersections of Afrobeat\, Cumbia\, and Soul that will lift you from your seat and leave you\nwanting more

SUMMARY:Seffarine at Oregon Shakespeare Festival
DESCRIPTION:“gorgeous intersection of Spanish flamenco\, Arabic and Andalusian music\, Persian classical\, and jazz” -Bass Player Magazine\n\nThe sounds that stir the dry winds of Southern Spain and Morocco\, two countries separated by only a whisper of the Mediterranean\, are the musical DNA of a beautifully complex extended family linking North Africa and Europe.\n\nThe musicians of Seffarine\, soulful Moroccan singer Lamiae Naki and flamenco guitarist Nat Hulskamp\, supported by master musicians of diverse cultures\, embrace and extend this rich legacy. Their exciting performances masterfully combine explosive flamenco footwork\, exotic instrumentation and grooving basslines. These diverse backgrounds meld\, creating what SoundRoots describes as “an ear-caressing blend of sounds from Spain and North Africa\, spiced with a bit of fiery instrumentation and percussion.”\n\n“Seffarine’s music can melt the coldest hearts” -Chicago Reader

SUMMARY:Tinariwen at the Showbox
DESCRIPTION:The tale of Tinariwen begins with the story of its founding father\, Ibrahim Ag Alhabib. The son of a Tuareg rebel\, at the age of four Ibrahim witnessed his father’s execution at the hands of the government during the 1963 uprising in Mali. \nGrowing up in between the deserts and refugee camps of Algeria\, Ibrahim was regarded as a wanderer and a loner – he was nicknamed ‘Abaraybone’\, meaning ‘ragamuffin child’. One day\, he remembers\, he was watching a western at a makeshift desert cinema and was struck by a scene in which a cowboy plays a song on a guitar. Inspired\, he built his first guitar using an oil can\, a stick and a bicycle brake wire. He started to learn to play\, practising old Tuareg melodies\, modern Arabic pop tunes and the Malian blues music of Ali Farka Touré.

Born in Jerusalem\, and raised in Gaza\, Saint Levant fuses English\, French and Arabic to bring a truly unique take on modern pop music. Effortless and seductive trilingual wordplay has established him as a breakout global heartthrob. SUMMARY:Ronnie Malley in Lute Legends
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Ronnie Malley\, Lucas Harris\, and Wen Zhao\, the Lute Legends Collective is a performing association of musicians who represent ancient plucked-string traditions. It’s certainly possible that some combinations of their instruments would have sounded together centuries ago\, such as a pipa player jamming together with an oud player somewhere along the old Silk Road. However\, the collective’s aim is less to recreate history and more to delight in creating a new arena where these old instruments can make music together. \nSat\, Mar 22\, 2025 @ 7:30 PM\nNordstrom Recital Hall at Benaroya Hall\n\n200 University St\, Seattle\, WA 98101

SUMMARY:Silkroad Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Artistic Partner Rhiannon Giddens \nGrammy Award-winning musical ensemble Silkroad’s Uplifted Voices brings together a stellar lineup of performer-composers from the Silkroad Ensemble in a series of pieces that highlight each artist’s musical storytelling. These compositions\, often inspired by their homeland\, ancestors\, community and family\, represent previously under-recognized voices from around the world\, offering a fresh perspective on the history and migration of music. \nThis unique program showcases a synthesis of global musical traditions and contemporary innovation\, with each artist contributing their unique voice to craft a shared musical experience. From the Tuscarora Nation in North Carolina\, singer-songwriter and activist Pura Fé blends traditional Native American sounds with contemporary Americana\, honoring her indigenous heritage while celebrating its enduring relevance. Japanese multi-percussionist Haruka Fujii has gained international acclaim as a prominent solo percussionist and marimbaist\, known for her interpretations of contemporary music and premieres of works by leading composers. Scottish harpist and composer Maeve Gilchrist intertwines jazz and folk while staying true to her Celtic roots\, expanding the role of the harp into new\, unexplored territories. Acclaimed cellist Karen Ouzounian centers her artistic practice in her love of the collaborative process and the development of adventurous new works. Lebanese violinist and composer Layale Chaker merges the intricate sounds of Arabic Maqam with jazz and contemporary classical elements\, inviting listeners on a journey into new soundscapes. Mazz Swift\, a violinist and composer\, brings a deeply innovative approach\, fusing classic African American music\, electronica and mindfulness\, with improvisation as a central theme across genres. \n$25 tickets for this show are now sold out\, but great seats at great prices are still available! \nThe ENCORE program for this performance is available to READ ONLINE \nGenerous support comes from the National Endowment for the Arts \nChamber Music Series generously underwritten by Cecilia Paul & Harry Reinert and Eric & Margaret Rothchild \n\n\nSUPPORT COMES FROM

SUMMARY:Tamino [Portland]
DESCRIPTION:Tamino \n“During a soundcheck at a small Italian festival\, which took place in between the walls of a medieval castle\, I would start playing a newly written song called Babylon. My band\, noticing that something special was happening\, quickly caught on and joined in\, improvising their parts along the way\, following my lead along a nearly 6-minute dynamic journey. By the end of the epic outro we all looked at each other with an excitement that had been absent from our faces for a while. Tour can get repetitive and turn even the most passionate people indifferent\, so injecting a boring soundcheck with the newness and grandeur of Babylon felt great. We played the track for the first time that night and have been playing it ever since. \nGoing into the studio to record my new album\, the song proved to be a cornerstone there as well\, and even though I had been playing it in front of audiences\, getting the right feel on record required many different approaches. The groundwork was laid in an old church turned recording studio in New Orleans. From there it traveled to Brussels and then back to New York. Three monumental cities\, each in their own way modern Babylons. I’m still excited about the release of this song\, even after playing and working on it so much. That means something.”
