SUMMARY:SAFF Arab Film Club: Dreams of a City
DESCRIPTION:When his father dies\, Dib\, his younger brother and their mother move away from their hometown Quneitra to Damascus. The mother’s despotic father reluctantly takes them in and tries to force the mother to remarry. Overwhelmed by the magic of the city\, Dib wants to discover everything and is full of dreams. His daily life is shaped by insults and punishments however. Dib grows up against a backdrop of the political upheavals of the 1950s (the end of the military dictatorship in Syria and the nationalization of the Suez Canal\, Nasser’s taking of power in Cairo\, Egyptian and Syrian unification in 1958) and loses his childish illusions in the face of such violence and brutality. The dreams of the city prove to be a nightmare. Mohammad Malas’ partly autobiographical debut film marked the transition to auteur cinema in Syria.

SUMMARY:Film "Half Moon" at Vancouver Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:The act of artistic creation can feel inadequate when trying to convey the tragedy of war\, but for clarinettist and composer Kinan Azmeh\, music is a way to bear that grief and break down the boundaries of emotional and cultural expression. A witness to lives lost and displaced in his home country of Syria\, Azmeh questions what role he can play as an artist and musician in a face of global conflicts and violence. \nFrank Scheffer’s introspective documentary follows Azmeh on his travels to New York\, Amsterdam\, and Palestine\, where the artist’s soulful music and collaborative performances enrapture audiences through outpourings of emotional urgency. Half Moon: Kinan Azmeh is a profound and celebratory meditation on art’s ability to inspire different cultures and reshape solidarity\, community\, and hope in the world\, even in dark times.

SUMMARY:Movie: Foragers + Floral Autumnal Wreath Making
DESCRIPTION:Anker + @manetteflowerco with @kitsappalestinesolidarity invite you to watch and discuss Jumana Manna’s film\, FORAGERS. Afterwards\, participants will combine foraged and provided floral to create autumnal wreaths to be taken home. Refreshments provided. \n100% of proceeds will benefit @ele_elna_elak\, a volunteer-driven campaign providing water and food to displaced families across Gaza. The funds go directly to purchasing goods and covering distribution costs on the ground. \nSaturday\, October 25\n1:30 – 5:00\n$100 donation or give what you can \nRSVP link in profile.\nDM if you would like to contribute floral\, photography\, food or volunteer. \nAbout FORAGERS\nFORAGERS depicts the dramas around the practice of foraging for wild edible plants in Palestine/Israel with wry humor and a meditative pace. Shot in the Golan Heights\, the Galilee and Jerusalem\, it moves between fiction\, documentary and archival footage to portray the impact of Israeli nature protection laws on these customs. The restrictions prohibit the collection of the artichoke-like ’akkoub and za’atar (thyme)\, and have resulted in fines and trials for hundreds caught collecting these native plants. For Palestinians\, these laws constitute an ecological veil for legislation that further alienates them from their land while Israeli state representatives insist on their scientific expertise and duty to protect. Following the plants from the wild to the kitchen\, from the chases between the foragers and the nature patrol\, to courtroom defenses\, FORAGERS captures the inherited love\, joy and knowledge in these traditions alongside their resilience to the prohibitive law.

SUMMARY:Seattle Arab Film Festival: With Hasan in Gaza
DESCRIPTION:Three MiniDV tapes of life in Gaza from 2001 were recently rediscovered. SUMMARY:SAFF Arab Film Club: Israel Palestine on Swedish TV
\nAlso showing: \n\nSun Nov 02: 2.30pm PDT

SUMMARY:Palestine Cinema Days: Movie: Divine Intervention
DESCRIPTION:Palestine Cinema Days: Divine Intervention\nSun Nov 02: 7.00pm PDT \nFree Admission! Please RSVP here. \nAbout\n(Elia Suleiman\, Palestine & France\, 2002\, 92min\, in Arabic\, English\, and Arabic\, Hebrew\, and English with English subtitles) \nIn Nazareth\, under a guise of banal normalcy\, the town embraces folly. \nUnder pressure from his failing business\, a man takes matters into his own hands and tries to break a chain reaction of petty feuds. He breaks down himself. The man is E.S. father. \nA love story takes place between a Palestinian man living in Jerusalem and a Palestinian woman from Ramallah. The man  E.S.  shifts between his ailing father and his love life\, trying to keep both alive. \nBecause of the political situation\, the womans freedom of movement ends at the Israeli army checkpoint between the two cities. Barred from crossing\, the lovers intimate encounters take place on a deserted lot right beside the checkpoint. The lovers are unable to exempt reality from occupation. \nA complicity of solemn desire begins to generate violent repercussions and\, against the odds\, their angry hearts counter-attack with spasms of spectacular fantasy . \nPresented as a part of Palestine Cinema Days 2025 \nOn the somber anniversary of the Balfour Declaration\, observed on November 2nd\, and in an effort to amplify Palestinian voices\, we are screening Divine Intervention directed by Elia Suleiman at 7:00 p.m. at Northwest Film Forum. The screening is free of charge.

SUMMARY:Movie: The Encampments
DESCRIPTION:THE ENCAMPMENTS follows student organizers at some of the world’s most prestigious universities as they take a historic stand against their institutions’ investments in the ongoing genocide in Gaza\, igniting one of the largest student movements in history which continues to have far-reaching effects on US and world policies today. \nFilmed on the ground and in real-time as these events were unfolding\, THE ENCAMPMENTS features detained student activist Mahmoud Khalil and takes viewers inside America’s student uprising with incredible intimacy and urgency. Professors\, whistleblowers from inside Ivy League administrations\, and student activists shed light on a moment that captivated the nation’s attention and continues to make headlines today. \n“What makes THE ENCAMPMENTS artistically triumphant is its sense of contemporary and historical detail\, owed to both footage shot by the filmmakers\, as well as by the protesters themselves. In the process\, co-directors Kei Pritsker and Michael T. Workman craft a work of cinema that’s as rigorously journalistic in its arguments as it is nakedly sentimental.” – IndieWire \n“This is more than a student protest—it’s a generational struggle for justice. Students have always led the charge for justice\, from the sit-ins of the Civil Rights Movement to the campus protests against South African apartheid. The encampments that started at Columbia are part of that legacy\, inspiring millions of people around the world. The film ensures the students in US and Gaza are heard\, their actions are remembered\, and the fight for Palestinian liberation continues.” – Macklemore \n“Khalil remains detained at an ICE facility in Louisiana amid a legal battle to prevent his deportation from the U.S. after the Trump administration ordered his removal… The legal challenge to Khalil might ultimately come down to the Supreme Court\, which would decide how far the secretary of state can determine whether a permanent resident can be removed for speech.” – Axios
