DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, May 2 for a discussion on state-level divestment campaigns in the United States. Activists from the state of Washington will share insights from their recent successful effort to push the state Treasurer to divest from Caterpillar\, due to the company’s longstanding involvement in Israel’s grave human rights violations against Palestinians. \nWe will also hear from organizers in California who are building a broad\, union-centered coalition to target the state’s pension funds and advance divestment efforts. They are motivated by the understanding that ending complicity is a legal and moral obligation. \nAnd we’ll hear from activists in Minnesota\, who successfully pressured the state to sell off most of its Israel Bonds. \nThis session will be valuable for activists who are already engaged in BDS campaigns\, as well as for those just getting started. Professor Shirin Saeidi was similarly disciplined at the University of Arkansas\, and these are but two examples of cases across the country.

SUMMARY:The Beauty of Tatreez: Exploring Palestinian Embroidery and Dress
DESCRIPTION:Embroidery as language: trace how Palestinian women stitched village identity\, lineage\, and land into the thobe… \n\n\n\n\nCLASS DESCRIPTION \nUntil the mid-twentieth century\, the dress of the Palestinian people was descriptive of identity; by societal segment (city dweller\, villager or bedouin)\, and by the region in which the wearer came. Within each regional style\, finer distinctions in women’s dress (thobe) were expressed that shared the maker’s life and the natural world around her. Palestinian women recorded their identity in their thobe with embroidery (tatreez) through a shared illustrative language of embroidered patterns\, stitching techniques and thread colors. The thobe records unwritten stories and serves as a visual register of collective and individual identities\, documenting a woman’s village\, tribe or town\, her marital status\, her familial lineage\, and the material impact of colonialism\, occupation\, war and exile. The regional identity of the woman defines the overall governing style of her thobe\, and evidence of identity is largely through her embodiment of land. \nThis lecture will discuss the regional distinctions in dress in historical Palestine during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries by city\, village and tribe for at least six regions\, to include Ramallah\, Galilee\, Gaza\, Bir Saba\, Al Khalil\, and Bethlehem. \nABOUT OUR LECTURER \nWafa Ghnaim is an art and dress historian\, fashion researcher\, embroiderer\, educator\, and the founder of the Tatreez Institute\, specializing in Palestinian embroidery and adornment. She is the author of Tatreez & Tea (2016) and THOBNA (2023)\, with research published by the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the Art Institute of Chicago\, and the National Gallery of Singapore. A former instructor at the Smithsonian and Research Scholar at the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, she now continues her preservation work as a Mellon Foundation Research Fellow at the Museum of the Palestinian People\, and a commissioned designer for Victoria & Albert Museum’s Thread Memory: Embroidery from Palestine.

She has been involved in legal\, political\, and grassroots initiatives for Palestinian rights for the last two decades\, including co-founding the Nobel Peace Prize-nominated International Solidarity Movement (ISM)\, and leading the Free Gaza Movement which\, beginning in 2008\, organized sea voyages to Gaza to confront and challenge Israel’s illegal blockade on the two million Palestinians living there.

My work centers on people from underrepresented communities facing pivotal choices. Dana must decide whether to stay silent or step into her voice—a choice that will reshape her life in this country. Shot in black and white in Chicago\, the film draws a connective line between past and present\, East and West. It’s a poetic\, gut-wrenching\, and ultimately hopeful story about moving through life clear-eyed in the face of judgment and prejudice.\n\nAbout the Director/Co-Writer:\nUsman Ally’s previous short film\, EMIGRE/AMERICANA was Jury Nominated For Best Short Film Over 15 Minutes at the Palm Springs International Shortfest\, and has screened at 10 film festivals including four Oscar Qualifying Festivals. As a writer\, his feature film script Mimi and Saad: An American Love Story scored highly on the Black List where it received critical praise. DESCRIPTION:In the spring of 2025\, journalist Chris Hedges and cartoonist Joe Sacco traveled to Cairo in pursuit of their second collaborative project. While in Cairo\, they would interview 29 Palestinian families who had recently left Gaza and collect the first-hand experiences of families that had faced – and survived – devastating degrees of fear and suffering. Committed to depicting these stories with unwavering focus and intent\, Hedges and Sacco seek to present a profound and detailed account of the displacement\, destruction\, and loss experienced by the people of Palestine. \nRequiem for Gaza pairs Sacco’s visceral imagery with Hedges’ deft prose to convey these accounts\, combining both comics and impactful single images within an unflinching narrative. Bolstered by thorough research and harrowing statistics\, Hedges and Sacco aim to cast a sharp light on what has been lost by these families and the people of Palestine\, reaching back to the first days of the genocide. Requiem for Gaza highlights the forced evacuations and constant displacement\, the false hopes of promised ceasefires and the struggles in seeking support from the rest of the world\, and the immense loss of life\, culture\, and community. \nBy bringing together the collective power of individual stories from all walks of life\, Hedges and Sacco strive to present a deeply human portrait of those who continue to live under this weight. Requiem for Gaza blends art and journalism to create a poignant tribute to not just the devastation experienced\, but the dignity and humanity they hold on to in the midst of it.
