Troutt Powell\, & Annissa Malvoisin \nInfo about the lecture: \nDespite ideals of scientific and scholarly objectivity\, both Egyptologists and non-specialists have often projected their own racial anxieties back into ancient Egypt. Recurrent attempts to prove that the ancient Egyptians were white or Black\, for example\, reveal more about modern societies than about ancient Egypt. The panel will discuss the history of how such debates have played out among modern Western and Egyptian scholars\, artists\, and writers\, and how interpretations of ancient Egypt are intertwined with personal beliefs and prejudices. \n  \nTo prepare for the program\, audience members should listen to this lecture HERE\, given at Harvard in 2017 in advance.

SUMMARY:Egyptian Rule and Canaanite Resistance as Seen from Jaffa: ARCE Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The excavations of the Egyptian New Kingdom fortress in Jaffa\, on the southern side of Tel Aviv were undertaken from 1956 to 2014. It was the only Egyptian fortress excavated in Canaan. Its archaeological record\, particularly the evidence from several dramatic destructions\, provides a unique perspective on Egyptian rule and local resistance to it from ca. 1460 to 1125 B.C. The archaeological evidence\, taken together with textual sources\, yields a picture of Canaanite resistance to the Egyptian military presence in Jaffa. This originated in centers located throughout the coastal plain and persisted for several centuries. This talk is drawn from excavations directed by the author and undertaken by the Jaffa Cultural Heritage Project between 2011 and 2014. Dr. Aaron Burke is the Kershaw Chair of Ancient Eastern Mediterranean Studies at UCLA.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation between Author and Activist Anan Ameri and Professor and Activist Nadine Naber \nDr. Anan Ameri is a scholar\, author\, activist\, and community organizer. She is the founding Director of the Arab American National Museum (AANM) and Palestine Aid Society of America. She holds a BA in Sociology from the University of Jordan\, an MA from Cairo University\, and a PhD from Wayne State University in Detroit. She was a fellow at the Bunting Institute of Radcliffe College\, a visiting scholar in Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard University\, and served as Interim Director of the Institute for Jerusalem Studies. The recipient of numerous awards\, Anan was inducted into the Women’s Hall of Fame in Lansing\, Michigan in 2016 and received ACCESS’s Arab American of the Year award in 2020. She enjoys writing and has authored and edited several articles and publications. She lives in Ann Arbor\, Michigan. \nDr. Nadine Naber is Professor in the Gender and Women’s Studies Program and the Global Asian Studies Program and holds an affiliation with the Department of Anthropology at UIC. Dr. Naber’s research interests lie at the intersections of transnational feminisms; women of color and queer of color theory; de-colonizing feminisms; empire studies; critical race studies; and Middle East Studies; and Arab American Studies. Dr. Naber is author of Arab America: Gender\, Cultural Politics\, and Activism (NYU Press\, 2012). She is co-editor of the books Race and Arab Americans (Syracuse University Press\, 2008); Arab and Arab American Feminisms\, winner of the Arab American Book Award 2012 (Syracuse University Press\, 2010); and The Color of Violence (South End Press\, 2006). Dr. Naber is an editorial board member of the Critical Ethnic Studies Journal\, the Journal of Palestine Studies\, and Al-Shabakah. Dr. Naber co- founded Arab and Muslim American Studies (an Ethnic Studies unit within the Program in American Culture) at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. SUMMARY:Eggstraordinary Objects: ostrich eggs as luxury items in the ancient Mediterranean
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Tamar Hodos\, University of Bristol \nDecorated ostrich eggs were traded as luxury items from the Middle East to the western Mediterranean during the second and first millennia BCE. The eggs were engraved\, painted\, and occasionally embellished with ivory\, precious metals and faience fittings. While archaeologists note their presence as unusual vessels in funerary and dedicatory contexts\, little is known about how or from where they were sourced\, decorated and traded. An ongoing project between researchers at Bristol University and the British Museum has established techniques to identify where the eggs originated and how they were decorated. She is the author of four novels\, including The Moor’s Account\, which won the American Book Award and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Her most recent novel\, The Other Americans\, was a Los Angeles Times bestseller\, a best-of-2019 selection from NPR\, Time\, and Kirkus\, and a finalist for the National Book Award in Fiction. Her essays and criticism have appeared in the Los Angeles Times\, the Washington Post\, Harper’s\, the Guardian\, and the New York Times. In fall 2020\, she will release Conditional Citizens\, a nonfiction exploration of how the rights\, liberties\, and protections of American citizenship are not always uniformly applied.
