DESCRIPTION:Join the DGH DEI Committee for a discussion with Professor Izzeldin Abuelaish on conflict\, hope\, peace\, and public health in Palestine. \nThursday\, October 5\, 2023 | 10:00-11:30 a.m.\nHans Rosling Center Room 101 \nProf. Izzeldin Abuelaish is a Palestinian Canadian physician and an internationally recognized human rights and peace activist devoted to advancing health and education opportunities for women and girls in the Middle East. Born and raised in Jabalia Refugee Camp in the Gaza Strip\, he is the first Palestinian doctor to receive an appointment in Medicine at an Israeli hospital. Through his work\, he has experienced firsthand the impacts of conflict in many countries. His experience working as both an insider and outsider to conflict has led him to believe that doctors are particularly well-poised to serve as peacemakers\, based on the moral doctrine of their profession. His work as both a healthcare practitioner and a peace advocate builds on this philosophy of health as a tool for peace. Prof. Abuelaish has been nominated five times for Nobel Peace Prize. \n  \nDr. Abuelaish’s book\, I Shall Not Hate: A Gaza Doctor’s Journey\, an autobiography inspired by the loss of his three daughters to Israeli shelling\, has achieved critical acclaim and has been translated into 23 languages. It is available as an e-book from the UW library and the Seattle Public Library.

DESCRIPTION:The fast-paced news cycle coupled with demands from social media to “pick a side” have confused audiences trying to follow the events in Israel and Gaza. This talk aims to provide context behind popular circulating narratives and tools for detecting misinformation. \nThis talk will be hosted by Sara Shaban\, author of Iranian Feminism and Transnational Ethics in Media Discourse. \nAbout the Author: Sara Shaban identifies as a critical/cultural scholar focused on the intersections between media\, women’s social movements\, and geopolitics in the Middle East. Shaban’s academic work is rooted within the theoretical frameworks of transnationalism and femonationalism. Her award-winning research is published in the International Journal of Communication\, Communication and Critical Cultural Studies\, and Journalism: Theory\, Practice & Criticism. \nPrior to life in academia\, Shaban worked in U.S. local news as a producer before pursuing freelance journalism in Israel\, the West Bank\, and Sierra Leone. Shaban is fueled by her passion for social justice\, specifically for immigrants and refugees. She was involved in initiatives to improve conditions for incoming refugees during the 2015 crisis and served as a volunteer and board member for the Immigrant and Refugee Women’s Program in St. Louis. Al-Maria is a Qatari-American artist\, writer\, and filmmaker whose current Henry exhibition\, Not My Bag\, interrogates histories of colonial authority in contemporary culture. Bet-Shlimon’s teaching and research focuses on the politics\, society\, and economy of twentieth-century Iraq and the broader Persian Gulf region\, as well as Middle Eastern urban history.\nThrough sharing of personal stories and literary\, journalistic\, and scholarly references that have been crucial to their work\, Al-Maria and Bet-Shlimon will explore how historical fiction and a critical study of histories can be acts of dissent while looking toward global social change.\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKERS\n\nSophia Al-Maria has had solo exhibitions at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art\, Qatar; the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art\, Moscow; the Tate Britain\, London; and the Whitney Museum of American Art\, New York; among other institutions. Bet-Shlimon’s first book\, City of Black Gold: Oil\, Ethnicity\, and the Making of Modern Kirkuk (Stanford University Press\, 2019)\, explores how oil and urbanization made ethnicity into a political practice in Kirkuk\, a multilingual city that was the original hub of Iraq’s oil industry.

DESCRIPTION:The Reinterpreting Liberation program and the Center for Community-Based Learning and Action (CCBLA) at The Evergreen State College present a discussion about how global struggles for liberation intersect.\n\nWith a focus on the genocide in Gaza\, Nada Elia and Jesse Hagopian will discuss how global struggles for liberation intersect and how this informs their work as activists and educators. This event\, which is open to the community\, is moderated by Jen Marlowe\, founder of DonkeySaddle Projects\, author\, and filmmaker.\n\nJesse Hagopian has been an educator for over twenty years and taught for over a decade at Seattle’s Garfield High School\, the site of the historic boycott of the MAP test. He is an editor for the social justice periodical Rethinking Schools and the book More Than a Score: The New Uprising Against High-Stakes Testing. He is a co-editor of Black Lives Matter at School\, Teaching for Black Lives\, Teacher Unions and Social Justice\, and an organizer with the Black Lives Matter at School movement. In 2011\, Jesse participated in the Interfaith Peace Builder’s historic first African Heritage Delegation that brought 14 African Americans to Israel and Palestine to meet with civil society organizations\, human rights groups\, and grassroots activists to better understand the conflict. Jesse will join the panel over Zoom.\n  \nNada Elia teaches Arab American Studies and Cultural Studies at Fairhaven College\, WWU\, where she is affiliated with the Women\, Gender and Sexuality Studies Program. A scholar-activist\, Nada is a member of the Palestinian Feminist Collective\, and regularly publishes editorials about gender\, activism\, and transnational struggles. She is the author of Greater than the Sum of Our Parts: Feminism\, Inter/Nationalism\, and Palestine. She has co-edited Critical Ethnic Studies: A Reader\, the INCITE! DESCRIPTION:Jerusalem Story tells the story of a unique city through a new lens—that of the city’s large and diverse indigenous Palestinian community. \nThis community has deep historic roots in Jerusalem and holds the strongest attachment to and love for their city. Yet\, they have been subjected to unrelenting efforts to erase their presence in\, and potential claim to\, the city—past\, present\, and future—in the service of cementing Israel’s imperative of claiming sole sovereignty in perpetuity over a “united Jewish Jerusalem.” Against this ongoing effort to erase the Palestinian cultural and community history as well as severing connection to place\, Jerusalem Story is reasserting the Palestinian presence. \nSPEAKERS: \nKate Rouhana \nFounding Director\, Jerusalem Story \nKate Rouhana is a writer\, editor\, and researcher.She has lived and worked as a journalist and researcher in Jerusalem and elsewhere in Palestine several times throughout her life. She holds an MA in Middle Eastern Studies and a BA in International Relations\, both from Harvard University. \nAmina Abdulhaq \nResearcher/Writer\, Jerusalem Story \nAmina Abdulhaq is a human rights lawyer and a researcher. Her family has deep historic roots in Jerusalem. Her work focuses on Jerusalem\, women\, and gender. Amina is fully devoted to raising all oppressed people’s voices\, inclusively embracing diversities and uniqueness. \nArda Aghazarian \nWriter\, Jerusalem Story \nArda Aghazarian is a communications consultant with ample experience in creative and professional writing and has also worked in audiovisual production—including film and radio. Arda has delivered training\, public speaking\, and mentoring at key global events\, mostly on issues related to women and conflict\, identity\, language\, and narrative. \nNadim Bawalsa \nResearcher/Writer\, Jerusalem Story \nNadim Bawalsa is a historian of modern Palestine and author of Transnational Palestine: Migration and the Right of Return before 1948 (Stanford University Press\, 2022).. Bawalsa’s work has also appeared in the Jerusalem Quarterly\, NACLA Report on the Americas\, Al-Shabaka: The Palestinian Policy Network\, the Journal of Palestine Studies\, and in two edited volumes. Bawalsa earned a PhD in Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies from NYU in 2017\, and an MA in Arab Studies from Georgetown University in 2010. In addition to his work with Jerusalem Story\, Bawalsa is associate editor at the Journal of Palestine Studies.
