After completing her appointment as a Post-Doctoral Researcher and later a Lecturer at Harvard University\, she became an Assistant Professor of electrical and computer engineering with Purdue University Northwest. She received the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Quebec (INRS)\, Montreal\, QC\, Canada. She was a Research Engineer with the Technology Evolution and Standards Group of Microcell\, Inc.\, (now Rogers Wireless)\, Montreal. Prof. Smida has served as the Chair for IEEE Women in Engineering\, Chicago Section\, from 2011 to 2013\, and has been the Chair of IEEE Communication Chapter\, Chicago Section\, since 2019. She currently serves as Editor for the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS\, Editor of the IEEE Open Journal of the Communications Society\, and a Guest Editor Sensors Open Access Journal. She is a Communication Society Distinguished Lecturer for 2021-2022. She was awarded the INSIGHT Into Diversity Magazine’s 2015 100 Inspiring Women in STEM\, the Academic Gold Medal of the Governor General of Canada in 2007 and the NSF CAREER award in 2015. Her research focuses on In-band Full-Duplex systems and applications\, backscatter modulation\, IoT\, and two-way communication networks. \nDima Qato serves as the Director for the Program on Medicines and Public Health at the University of Southern California’s School of Pharmacy. In addition\, she also serves as the Hygeia Centennial Chair and Associate Professor (with tenure) in the Titus Family Department of Clinical Pharmacy. She has also been appointed as a Senior Fellow with the USC Leonard D. Schaeffer Center for Health Policy and Economics. Prior to joining USC\, Dr. Qato was an Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Systems\, Outcomes and Policy at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy (2012-2020). She also serves as a National Academy of Medicine Pharmacy Fellow for 2018-2020. Dr. Qato received her PharmD from UIC\, an MPH from the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health and a PhD in Public Health from the University of Illinois School of Public Health. At the USC School of Pharmacy\, she will develop and lead interdisciplinary research efforts focusing on drug utilization\, access to medicines\, and pharmaceutical policy both in the U.S. and globally to better understand why medications are used\, or not used\, and how they can and should be used in the population to promote equity\, longevity\, and good health. \nLeila Amiri serves as Assistant Dean for Admissions and Recruitment at the College of Medicine at UIC. Previously she was the Director of the Medical College Admissions at UIC\, and prior to that the Director of Admission and Financial Aid at the University of Chicago. She has served as the liaison for the committee on admissions for the Association of American Medical Colleges and as an AAMC holistic review facilitator working with other medical schools admissions committees on how to include holistic review in their process.

DESCRIPTION:THE SPRING 2022 ONLINE FILM AND DISCUSSION SERIES  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe theme for this year’s Film Series is Sumud. This is a Palestinian word that means “Steadfastness” or “Steadfast Perseverance.” It is a cultural value in Palestine. There is no possible way Palestinians can defend themselves in the face of one of the most well-equipped military powers in the world. They practice “sumud” which sometimes is an act of making breakfast\, sometimes walking the children to the checkpoint on the way to school\, sometimes\, joining a peaceful protest at a blocked crossroad\, just to say “We are here!” \n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this series we will meet a young Israeli woman who also practices her own sumud as she resists joining the Israeli military. DESCRIPTION:For Women’s history month\, the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of South Florida has organized a panel of gender rights poets\, scholars\, and Southwest Asia and North Africa refugees who will share insights on the crises in Afghanistan and Palestine\, placing each within its historical context of U.S. involvement. As Florida is set to receive thousands of refugees from Afghanistan in the next year\, the panel will help attendees begin to understand local implications and experiences of US imperialist complicity as it relates to the West’s hesitance to confront human-rights issues in Southwest Asia and North Africa\, more generally. \nPanelists include Zahra Wakilzada and Dina Awshah; the moderator will be Dr. Rahi Dayerizadeh. This program is funded in part through a Florida Humanities Greater Good: Humanities in Academia Grant in partnership with the University of South Florida.

DESCRIPTION:Join WAPPC and Donkeysaddle Projects on March 19th at 4pm PT for a screening of the film\, “There Is A Field” followed by a discussion.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nJoin WAPPC and Donkeysaddle Projects on March 19th at 4pm PT for a screening of the film\, “There Is A Field” followed by a discussion with members of the film team. “There Is A Field” tells the story of Asel Asleh\, an unarmed teen who was murdered by Israeli police as he participated in a demonstration\, calling for an end to the Israeli occupation and settler-colonization. Performed by Black Lives Matter activists\, “There Is A Field” offers a uniquely personal lens for learning about intersecting systems of oppression and structural racism. This fundraising event will also include the opportunity to learn more about and support both Donkeysaddle Projects and the WAPPC’s organizing efforts to enable poor and low income people to attend the PPC Mass Rally and march on Washington DC on June 18th. (Proceeds will be split between Donkeysaddle and WAPPC)

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Rothchild will provide a personal exploration of the ancient city of Jerusalem\, with a special focus on East Jerusalem and the surrounding areas of greater Jerusalem\, which have experienced decades of “Judaization” and erasure of the Palestinian presence.  What are the costs of these policies\, not only to Palestinians\, but also to Jewish Israelis? How is this a mirror of the ongoing occupation of Palestine?  What can we learn and what can we do? \nAlice Rothchild is a physician\, author\, and filmmaker who has focused her interest on human rights and social justice on the Israel/Palestine conflict since 1997.  She practiced Obstetrics & Gynecology for almost 40 years.  Until her retirement she served as Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology\, Harvard Medical School.   She writes and lectures widely\, is the author of Broken Promises\, Broken Dreams: Stories of Jewish and Palestinian Trauma and Resilience (translated into Hebrew and German); On the Brink: Israel and Palestine on the Eve of the 2014 Gaza Invasion; and Condition Critical: Life and Death in Israel/Palestine. \nDr. Rothchild directed the documentary film\, Voices Across the Divide. She is also on the board of the We Are Not Numbers program in Gaza and the Gaza Mental Health Foundation\, and on the steering committee of the Jewish Voice for Peace Health Advisory Council. \n

She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations (www.cfr.org) \nKaren Leggett Abouraya is a journalist and children’s author\, winning the 2013 Arab American Book Award and other honors for Hands Around the Library: Protecting Egypt’s Treasured Books. She is a dual citizen of the U.S. and Egypt\, and with her Egyptian-born husband\, chairs the Baltimore Luxor Alexandria Sister City Committee and the Friends of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) Maryland\, Virginia\, DC. Together they also produce the podcast American Egyptian Women of Influence.  Karen facilitates online conversations between Egyptian and American children and co-hosted a conference on informal education at the BA in 2015.  She reviewed children’s books for the New York Times\, is a past president of the Children’s Book Guild of Washington\, D.C. and has served as a judge for children’s writing contests in Egypt and Montgomery County. She earned her B.A. in international relations from Brown University.

To be released on Tuesday\, 5th April. \nHeike recently exhibited at Dubai Expo 2020\, and launched her book documenting the history of embroidery in the Levant region titled “Anat and her hero Baal – The embroidery language of The Levant”. \nWhen Heike Weber arrived in Syria in 1982\, seeking refuge from the Lebanese civil war\, she fell in love with the country’s capital Damascus.During the years of war\, she braved the mortars and shelling that left their marks on the walls of her home located in a narrow alleyway in the heart of Damascus old city.Now 70\, the German woman vowed to not leave the country and she said she feels a sense of duty to the country she has called home for decades.Married to a Palestinian\, Weber started her life in the Yarmouk camp\, near Damascus\, where she followed her passion for embroidery. Elora Shehabuddin presents a unique and engaging history of feminism as a story of colonial and postcolonial interactions between Western and Muslim societies. Muslim women have found themselves having to negotiate their demands for rights within other forms of struggle—for national independence or against occupation\, racism\, and economic inequality. Through stories of both well-known and relatively unknown figures\, Shehabuddin recounts instances of conflict alongside those of empathy\, collaboration\, and solidarity across this extended period. Sisters in the Mirror is organized around stories of encounters between women and men from South Asia\, Britain\, and the United States that led them\, as if they were looking in a mirror\, to pause and reconsider norms in their own society\, including cherished ideas about women’s roles and rights. These intertwined stories confirm that nowhere\, in either Western or Muslim societies\, has material change in girls’ and women’s lives come easily or without protracted struggle. \nAbout Author: Elora Shehabuddin is Professor of Transnational Asian Studies and Core Faculty\, Center for the Study of Women\, Gender\, and Sexuality\, at Rice University. DESCRIPTION:Event Description: Dr. Reem El Mutwalli with Amado AlFadni- Sudanese Egyptian Visual Artist & Najlaa El- Ageli- Founder of Noon Art discuss the exhibition. \nNajlaa El-Ageli is an architect with over twenty years of experience in the profession. Passionate about the arts\, she founded Noon Arts Projects in 2012\, a small private art foundation\, to promote contemporary Libyan art and expose it to the world stage. Collaborating with cultural foundations and galleries\, she has curated over 16 projects and successfully shed light on the current Libyan artistic scene. \nAmado AlFadni is an artist who was born in Cairo\, Egypt in 1976 to Sudanese parents. His childhood environment was composed of both the Cairene street and the traditions of a Sudanese household. The relationship and the tension between these two different cultures strongly influenced his views\, making him question the subject of identity with its related rhetoric\, as well as the variables of nation and ethnicity in his work.
