SUMMARY:Protest/Protect: A Sukoon Virtual Reading
DESCRIPTION:6 p.m. EDT Monday\, July 27\, 2020\nProtest/Protect: A Sukoon Live Reading\nFree\nRSVP to Facebook event \nIn collaboration with Sukoon\, AANM presents a live reading around the theme of “Protest/Protect\,” co-curated and hosted by Sukoon founding editor Rewa Zeinati\, with performers Aja Monet\, Chaun Ballard\, Safia Elhillo and Layla Azmi Goushey\, and music from Ian Fink. \nIn all 50 states and across the world\, protests have been erupting. Why do we protest? Why do we question? Why do we create? To dismantle systems of injustice and oppression\, and to reimagine a future in which we may exist more fully. We also do it to preserve\, protect and remember what’s rightfully ours: to live a life in dignity. As demonstrations continue across the country in response to long-standing issues of systemic racism and injustice\, “Protest/Protect” honors the global uprisings of the Black Lives Matter Movement. Through this event\, we will hold space for writers and activists to express the struggles\, experiences and victories of the ongoing protests in the fight for freedom. \nThis virtual reading will be streamed live on AANM’s Facebook page\, so be sure to RSVP to the Facebook event to be notified and tune in when the livestream goes up.  \n  \nAja Monet is a surrealist blues poet\, storyteller and organizer born and raised in Brooklyn\, NY\, who follows in the long legacy and tradition of poets participating and assembling in social movements. Monet co-founded a political home for artists and organizers called Smoke Signals Studio. She facilitates Voices: Poetry for the People\, a workshop and collective in collaboration with Community Justice Project and Dream Defenders. She is currently working on her next full collection of poems\, Florida Water. \n\nChaun Ballard’s chapbook\, Flight\, was the winner of the 2018 Sunken Garden Poetry Prize and is published by Tupelo Press. She is co-editor of the anthology Halal If You Hear Me (Haymarket Books\, 2019) and currently a Wallace Stegner Fellow at Stanford University. \n\nLayla Azmi Goushey is a Professor of English at St. Louis Community College in St. Louis\, Missouri. SUMMARY:Excavating Dangeil: Royal Statues and Sacred Rams
DESCRIPTION:Register by clicking here.\n\nJoin Dr. Julie Anderson for an exploration of the Dangeil archeological site.\nExcavations at Dangeil\, located close to the Nile in what is now central Sudan\, have uncovered a previously unknown 1st century CE temple dedicated to the god Amun. Earlier rulers discovered there in a statue hoard include the celebrated Kushite Pharoah Taharqo. This is one of many discoveries at Dangeil throwing unexpected light on African history from antiquity into the medieval period and later.\n\nDr. Julie Anderson is responsible for curating the Sudanese and Nubian collections of the British Museum. Excavating at numerous sites in Egypt and Sudan since 1987\, her research interests include daily life and material culture in the Nile valley and surrounding deserts. Since 1997\, she has co-directed archaeological excavations in Sudan together with the National Corporation for Antiquities and Museums (NCAM) in the Berber-Abidiya region. Her current fieldwork is concentrated upon the late Kushite site of Dangeil (3rd century BC – 4th century AD)\, situated approximately 350km north of Khartoum\, where excavation of a large Amun temple\, surrounding temenos enclosure and associated cemetery is underway. Currently\, she is the Honorary Secretary for the International Society for Nubian Studies and for the Sudan Archaeological Research Society.\nThis program is presented in partnership with the American Research Center in Egypt.\n\n\n1:00 p.m. EST — 7:00 p.m. EET \n\n\nPlease help the NAC support artists. By making a donation with your registration\, you contribute directly to the NAC Artist Fellows program\, helping to further the careers of up-and-coming artists.\nThis program will be hosted via Zoom. SUMMARY:Movie screening and discussion of Naila and the Uprising
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening and discussion of Naila and the Uprising\, a Just Vision documentary\, with the Deputy Director and a Producer.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nJoin Museum of the Palestinian People for a special film screening and discussion of Naila and the Uprising with Just Vision’s Deputy Director\, Emma Alpert and one of the film’s producers\, Rula Salameh. \nNaila and the Uprising is a documentary film about a nation-wide uprising that breaks out in the Occupied Palestinian Territories\, and the story of a young woman in Gaza who must make a choice between love\, family\, and freedom. Undaunted\, she embraces all three\, joining a clandestine network of women in a movement that forces the world to recognize the Palestinian right to self-determination for the first time. Naila and the Uprising chronicles the remarkable journey of Naila Ayesh and a fierce community of women at the frontlines\, whose stories weave through the most vibrant\, nonviolent mobilization in Palestinian history – the First Intifada in the late 1980s. You can watch the trailer\, here. \nThe film will be available for registrants to view at their own convenience prior to our discussion with Emma and Rula on Zoom on Friday\, August 28 at 12pm EDT. SUMMARY:The Goddess Isis and the Kingdom of Meroe - ARCE Members Only
DESCRIPTION:The Goddess Isis and the Kingdom of Meroe\n\n\nDr. Solange Ashby\n\n2:00 PM Illinois/12pm PST\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDiscussions of the widespread appeal of the cult of Isis in antiquity often omit any mention of the Nubian priests who served the rulers of the Kingdom of Meroe (located south of Egypt in the Sudan) and the royal donations of gold that they delivered to the temple of Isis at Philae\, located at Egypt’s border with Nubia. Those funds were essential to the survival of the temple of Philae\, allowing it to remain in active use for centuries after other temples had been abandoned in Egypt. I will describe the rites performed by the Nubian priests and their participation in a tradition of Nubian pilgrimage to this site that spanned one thousand years. \nAs a Black Egyptologist it is important to me to investigate the southern connections that are evident in the ancient religious practices of Egypt. Much work remains to be done to highlight these connections. \n\nThis online lecture is available exclusively to active ARCE members. To register\, click here.\nRegistration is required and closes 48 hours before the event.\nBiography of Solange Ashby: \nSolange Ashby received her PhD in Egyptology\, with a specialization in ancient Egyptian language and Nubian religion\, from the University of Chicago. She has researched in Egypt at the temple of Philae and participated in an archaeological excavation in El-Kurru\, Sudan (royal Kushite cemetery). Her first book\, Calling Out to Isis: The Enduring Nubian Presence at Philae\, was released in July by Gorgias Press.  Her current research explores the roles of women in traditional Nubian religious practices. Dr. Ashby is working on the first monograph dedicated to the history\, religious symbolism\, and political power of the queens of Kush.

SUMMARY:Tatreez Workshops and Lectures by Tatreez and Tea
DESCRIPTION:Your instructor is author and scholar Wafa Ghnaim\, founder of Tatreez & Tea! \nTatreez & Tea’s mission is to preserve Palestinian embroidery and storytelling traditions in the diaspora. Tatreez & Tea is the first of it’s kind. When Wafa first founded Tatreez & Tea in 2016\, she was the only educator solely focused on Palestinian embroidery\, traveling the US and the world. Now\, new local initiatives\, culture bearers\, “tatreez circles”\, and mentors are emerging from communities around the world like never before. The tatreez revolution has gained a beautiful momentum and now is the time to join. \nWafa’s goal in her educational classes are three-fold: educate students from art history and oral history perspectives that preserve the meanings\, stories and symbolism of traditional Palestinian embroidery motifs; teach versatile skills that allow students to eventually produce large independent projects; encourage students to become creative and grow beyond simply abiding by traditional embroidery principles. \nClick here for upcoming events! \nhttps://www.tatreezandtea.com/events
