SUMMARY:2022 Online Film and Discussion MidEast Series: Sumud
DESCRIPTION:THE SPRING 2022 ONLINE FILM AND DISCUSSION SERIES  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe theme for this year’s Film Series is Sumud. This is a Palestinian word that means “Steadfastness” or “Steadfast Perseverance.” It is a cultural value in Palestine. There is no possible way Palestinians can defend themselves in the face of one of the most well-equipped military powers in the world. They practice “sumud” which sometimes is an act of making breakfast\, sometimes walking the children to the checkpoint on the way to school\, sometimes\, joining a peaceful protest at a blocked crossroad\, just to say “We are here!” \n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this series we will meet a young Israeli woman who also practices her own sumud as she resists joining the Israeli military. We will discover what sumud looks like in the devastation we call “Gaza”\, and in the tragedy we call “Hebron.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\nTo receive links to the film (watch on your own time within 48 hours of the discussion) and the Zoom discussion\, send a message to seattlemideastfocus@gmail.com \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMARCH 25\, 8 P.M. Footage documenting numerous appalling situations corroborates their compelling stories\, from soldiers taking pot shots with rubber bullets and conducting humiliating searches of passersby to arresting ten-year-olds and turning entire households upside down. What effect did these military duties have on their moral compass? Looking back and growing older\, how do they feel about this mission now? \nLearn more here. \nSkies above Hebron is a coming of age story depicting three boys coping\, each in his own way\, with physical and mental obstacles enclosing life in their Palestinian hometown of Hebron. \nLearn more here. \nwith host: \nspecial guest: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMAY 6\, 8 P.M. SUMMARY:There Is A Field\, a film\, by Jen Marlowe
DESCRIPTION:Join WAPPC and Donkeysaddle Projects on March 19th at 4pm PT for a screening of the film\, “There Is A Field” followed by a discussion.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nJoin WAPPC and Donkeysaddle Projects on March 19th at 4pm PT for a screening of the film\, “There Is A Field” followed by a discussion with members of the film team. “There Is A Field” tells the story of Asel Asleh\, an unarmed teen who was murdered by Israeli police as he participated in a demonstration\, calling for an end to the Israeli occupation and settler-colonization. Performed by Black Lives Matter activists\, “There Is A Field” offers a uniquely personal lens for learning about intersecting systems of oppression and structural racism. This fundraising event will also include the opportunity to learn more about and support both Donkeysaddle Projects and the WAPPC’s organizing efforts to enable poor and low income people to attend the PPC Mass Rally and march on Washington DC on June 18th. (Proceeds will be split between Donkeysaddle and WAPPC)

SUMMARY:Solidarity is a Verb: SWANA Liberation\, Gender Rights\, and Refugee Experiences (online)
DESCRIPTION:For Women’s history month\, the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of South Florida has organized a panel of gender rights poets\, scholars\, and Southwest Asia and North Africa refugees who will share insights on the crises in Afghanistan and Palestine\, placing each within its historical context of U.S. involvement. As Florida is set to receive thousands of refugees from Afghanistan in the next year\, the panel will help attendees begin to understand local implications and experiences of US imperialist complicity as it relates to the West’s hesitance to confront human-rights issues in Southwest Asia and North Africa\, more generally. \nPanelists include Zahra Wakilzada and Dina Awshah; the moderator will be Dr. Rahi Dayerizadeh. This program is funded in part through a Florida Humanities Greater Good: Humanities in Academia Grant in partnership with the University of South Florida.

SUMMARY:Unlearn to Relearn: Shifting Attitudes for Arabs with Disabilities
DESCRIPTION:Nadwa (Public Conversation)\n  November 16\, 2021\n\n\nVirtual via Zoom \n\n\n\nDisability? Disabled? Special Needs? What language and framework do/should we use in the Arab Community? Join us for a discussion on disability in the Arab/American community! \nHistorically and traditionally\, people with disabilities across the globe have been systematically excluded and marginalized from all aspects of society. Although perspectives and attitudes about disability have changed in recent decades\, people with disabilities of color continue to face systemic and cultural barriers that deprive this community of accessing quality education and resources that will enable them to become valued members of society. In particular\, people with disabilities among Arab communities\, by large\, continue to face persistent and blatant oppression and barriers from living quality and humane lives. This webinar is the first of its kind. We will explicitly address long-term disability issues that have impacted Arab communities in the United States and the Middle East. The webinar aims to ignite new ways of thinking about disability and how all of us—both disabled and non-disabled alike—can begin to create a better society that promotes the basic principles of independence\, respect and dignity for Arabs with physical\, intellectual\, and mental health disabilities. \nFacilitators: \n\nAdnan Alaboudi\, International Disability Self Advocate\, Jordan\nMarina Salman\, Access Living Chicago\nRanda Abdelrahim\, PhD Candidate Disability Studies\, UIC\n\nReal-time live captioning will be provided. For questions\, additional information\, and/or accessibility contact us at arabamcc@uic.edu \nEvent is co-organized by the Arab American Cultural Center and the Disability Cultural Center \nSpeaker bios: \nAdnan Alaboudi is a person with disabilities (dual bottom amputation above and under the knee). Adnan is the Executive Director of the Landmines Survivors Network from 1999-2008 and a member of the Committee for Drafting of the International Convention on Human Rights with Disability in the United Nations. He is an activist and coach in the field of persons with disabilities and a professional sport in power games\, table tennis\, swimming and water skiing\, and participating in global\, Olympic\, and Arab sports. Adnan is the coordinator of awareness and promotion programs in the Supreme Council for People with Disabilities in Jordan 2009 – 2017. \nMarina Salman serves as the SOAR case manager for the Colbert Transition Program at Access Living Chicago where she helps individuals living in long-term care facilities reintegrate back into their communities after their recovery. She is also involved in numerous advocacy efforts that focus on the intersectionality of race and disability\, which includes healthcare and criminal justice reform. Marina completed her Master’s in Counseling Psychology with a focus in Sport and Health Psychology from Adler University in Chicago. She is an Arab American woman with multiple disabilities who looks to empower Arabs with disabilities to live meaningful lives through the power of education and experience. \nRanda Abdelrahim is a visiting research specialist at the department of disability and human development\, University of Illinois Chicago and a PhD candidate of disability studies. As an Arab American immigrant\, Randa is interested in examining contextual factors of disability across immigrants and minority groups. Her research focuses on how multiple personal and social factors such as gender\, culture\, race\, and income contribute to disparities in accessing health care and disability services for people with disabilities and their caregivers. Her advocacy work includes supporting people with disabilities with a focus on those who identify as Arab. She is currently a member of the Disability and Immigration Taskforce of Illinois.

SUMMARY:University Book Store Presents: Laila Lalami in conversation with Dr. Anu Taranath
DESCRIPTION:Conditional Citizens: On Belonging In America (Pantheon Books) \nNovember 03\, 2021\, 6:00 PM (Pacific Time) Virtual \nFree \n\nUniversity Book Store is proud to present author and Pulitzer Prize-finalist Laila Lalami for a discussion about her new book Conditional Citizens. Laila will be joined in conversation with Dr. Anu Taranath\, Teaching Professor in the English and Comparative History of Ideas (CHID) departments at the University of Washington.\nThis is a free Zoom event but registration\, through the link provided\, is required to receive a Zoom code to join the Webinar. If you have any questions\, please email events@ubookstore.com. See you there! \nABOUT THE BOOK\nA New York Times Editors’ Choice • Finalist for the California Book Award • Longlisted for the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction • Best Book of the Year: Time\, NPR\, Bookpage\, Los Angeles Times \nIn this brilliantly argued and deeply personal work\, Pulitzer Prize finalist Laila Lalami recounts her unlikely journey from Moroccan immigrant to U.S.citizen\, using her own story as a starting point for an exploration of the rights\, liberties\, and protections that are traditionally associated with American citizenship. Tapping into history\, politics\, and literature\, she elucidates how accidents of birth—such as national origin\, race\, and gender—that once determined the boundaries of Americanness still cast their shadows today\, poignantly illustrating how white supremacy survives through adaptation and legislation. Weaving together her experiences with an examination of the place of nonwhites in the broader American culture\, Lalami illuminates how conditional citizens are all those whom America embraces with one arm and pushes away with the other. \n\n\nLaila Lalami was born in Rabat and educated in Morocco\, Great Britain\, and the United States. She is the author of four novels\, including The Moor’s Account\, which won the American Book Award\, the Arab American Book Award\, and the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. Her most recent work\, The Other Americans\, was a finalist for the National Book Award. Her essays have appeared in the Los Angeles Times\, The Washington Post\, The Nation\, Harper’s Magazine\, The Guardian\, and The New York Times. Lalami is a professor of creative writing at the University of California\, Riverside. She lives in Los Angeles. www.lailalalami.com

SUMMARY:We Will Remain: Street Art as Resistance from San Francisco to Palestine
DESCRIPTION:Oftentimes\, we see Palestinian resistance through protests\, advocacy campaigns\, and speeches. \nBut there is such a long and rich history of Palestinian resistance – and joy – through art – stitched flags on a thobe when Israel banned the Palestinian flag from flying during the Second Intifada\, to songs\, to vast murals on the apartheid wall. \nFrom San Francisco to Palestine\, artists are using public spaces to showcase their powerful artwork and messages of resistance. Learn from Palestinian artists about their work\, challenges they face in creating these public art pieces\,  and why they choose this powerful form of expression.

SUMMARY:Across Disciplines: Alia Ali & Tarek Yamani
DESCRIPTION:Virtual event\nFREE with RSVP \nJoin multimedia artist Alia Ali and musician/composer Tarek Yamani as the two artists of different disciplines interview one another\, discover unexpected connections\, and discuss each of their newest projects commissioned by UMS and AANM. \nAlia Ali (Arabic: عاليه علي // Sabean: ‎ 𐩲𐩱𐩡𐩺𐩲|𐩲𐩱𐩡) is a Yemeni-Bosnian-US multi-media artist. A child of migrant linguists\, Ali has traveled to sixty-seven countries\, lived in and between seven\, and grown-up among five languages. Her migrations have led her to process the world through interactive experiences and the belief that the damage of translation and interpretation of written language has dis-served particular communities\, resulting in the threat of their exclusion\, rather than a means of understanding. As an artist who exists on the borders of identifying as West Asian\, Eastern European\, a United States citizen\, queer\, culturally Muslim yet spiritually independent\, her work explores cultural binaries\, challenges culturally sanctioned oppression\, and confronts the dualistic barriers of conflicted notions of gender\, politics\, media\, and citizenship. Through her practice\, Ali critiques linguistics and inherited political structures and narratives\, while simultaneously attempting to counter the polarization and miscommunication that imperils communities across the world\, encouraging viewers to confront their own prejudices. \nTarek Yamani is an American-Lebanese New York-based composer and a self-taught jazz pianist dedicated to exploring relationships between African-American Jazz and Arabic rhythms/maqams. He is the recipient of awards such as the Givanas Foundation Grant\, Huygens Scholarship\, Andrea Elkenbracht Award\, Prins Bernhard Culture Fund\, Thelonious Monk Composers Competition Prize\, Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Residency\, New Dutch Composition Contest\, and Composer’s Platform Commission by the Abu Dhabi Festival. Tarek has been recently commissioned by UMS (Ann Arbor) to write a new piece for the genre-bending Spektral Quartet to be premiered on October 27th\, as part of the UMS Digital Artist Residency.

SUMMARY:Virtual: Building for Hope with Marwa al-Sabouni
DESCRIPTION:We can’t begin to say how delighted\, how grateful\, how honored we are to finally be able to present a program with author\, thinker\, architect\, Marwa al-Sabouni. If all goes well (In sh’Allah)\, she will be joining us at this special hour\,  virtually and ‘live’ from her home in Homs\, Syria to discuss her extraordinary new book\, Building for Hope: Towards an Architecture of Belonging (Thames & Hudson). Building for Hope comes five years after Marwa al-Sabouni’s first book\, The Battle for Home: The Vision of a Young Architect in Syria\, introduced the larger world to a writer uniquely adept at using words to convey ideas from books\, book-study\, life being fully lived (and wars survived) and from the physical spaces of buildings\, streets\, land-use patterns that do so much to shape how we live as individuals and as communities and countries. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Ambitious… Building for Hope is expansive\, abstract\, and at times extraordinarily idealistic… Al-Sabouni argues that architecture is a necessary agent for any kind of peace\, any possibility of belonging in our modern\, extremely polarized world… It’s especially enlightening to read about Western cities through the lens of an architect specialized in Islamic traditions… Building for Hope is dense and daring. Readers will finish with a list of people and places to investigate\, as well as with a firm belief that a better future lies in valuing community over ostentation\, coherence and decency over luxury\, truly livable cities over places designed purely for profit.” – World-Architects.com. \n“A gifted writer and illustrator\, al-Sabouni’s visionary ideas will inspire architects\, designers and urban planners across the world.” – Shahina Piyarali \, Shelf Awareness. \nYes\, the illustrations\, that language\, too. This is one not to be missed. \nSaturday\, September 25\, 2021 – 10:00am

SUMMARY:Virtual screening of the documentary film "Lost Cities of Palestine" directed by Ramez Kazmouz
DESCRIPTION:Click here to register for this event. \nAbout the Film \nAn extraordinary insight into Palestinian life in the city before 1948\, revealing the loss of a culture and lifestyle. \nThe film\, directed by Ramez Kazmouz\, is 49 minutes. \nRarely seen archival footage accompanies memories and accounts of forgotten Palestinian cities and the catastrophic effect the creation of Israel in 1948 had on them. \nHaifa\, Nazareth\, and Jaffa have all been overshadowed by Tel Aviv\, but in their day each of the Palestinian cities had magnificent commercial and cultural ability. \nMade for Al Jazeera in 2011\, “Lost cities of Palestine” provides a rare opportunity to see Palestine as it was in the 30s and 40s and learn about the everyday life and culture of urban Palestine before 1948.

SUMMARY:Arab Film Series Online: Eleven Reflections on September
DESCRIPTION:Film available Thursday\, Sept. 9 – Thursday\, Sept. 16\nOnline Stream – Register for Free \nJoin the Arab Film Series Online for a special program Eleven Reflections on September by Andrea Assaf: A poetry\, music\, movement and digital media exploration of Arab American experience\, Wars on/of Terror\, and “the constant\, quiet rain of death amidst beauty” that each autumn brings in a post-9/11 world. The program will be accompanied by a discussion with the artist Andrea Assaf as well as Lubana Al Qantar\, moderated by Leila Buck\, available Sept. 13-16. \nBased on a series of poems Andrea Assaf has written since 2001\, Eleven Reflections spans the fall of the Twin Towers\, the U.S. wars in Afghanistan and Iraq\, the global rise of anti-Arab racism and Islamophobia\, and the revolutions and uprisings that have swept through the Arab world in the last decade. Aesthetically\, the poems explore the disintegration of language in the face of violence\, prejudice\, and unspeakable horror\, as they progress from lyrical to abstract and broken. \nThe annual witnessing of autumn leaves becomes a metaphor for the fallen…as we approach the 20th anniversary of 9/11\, this ever-evolving tour de force finds new relevance and urgency. As an experimental work that lives at the intersection of live performance and digital media\, Eleven Reflections on September is beautiful\, haunting\, and truly genre-shattering. \n104 minutes / 2021 / United States / Experimental / English and Arabic with English subtitles \nPresented in partnership with Arab Film and Media Institute and ArteEast \nMORE INFO + RSVP

SUMMARY:Omar El Akkad in Conversation With Roy Scranton
DESCRIPTION:From Omar El Akkad\, the widely acclaimed author of American War\, comes What Strange Paradise (Knopf)\, a beautifully written\, unrelentingly dramatic\, and profoundly moving new novel that brings the global refugee crisis down to the level of a child’s eyes. More bodies have washed up on the shores of a small island. Another overfilled\, ill-equipped\, dilapidated ship has sunk under the weight of its too many passengers: Syrians\, Ethiopians\, Egyptians\, Lebanese\, Palestinians\, all of them desperate to escape untenable lives in their homelands. And only one has made the passage: nine-year-old Amir\, a Syrian boy who has the good fortune to fall into the hands not of the officials but of Vänna: a teenage girl\, native to the island\, who lives inside her own sense of homelessness in a place and among people she has come to disdain. And though she and the boy are complete strangers\, though they don’t speak a common language\, she determines to do whatever it takes to save him. In alternating chapters\, we learn the story of the boy’s life and of how he came to be on the boat; and we follow the girl and boy as they make their way toward a vision of safety. But as the novel unfurls we begin to understand that this is not merely the story of two children finding their way through a hostile world\, it is the story of our collective moment in this time: of empathy and indifference\, of hope and despair — and of the way each of those things can blind us to reality\, or guide us to a better one. El Akkad will be joined in conversation by Roy Scranton\, author of Learning to Die in the Anthropocene and We’re Doomed. Now What?. \nRegister for the Zoom event  /  Buy the Book
