SUMMARY:Reconstruction\, Reconsidered: Belonging and Urban Contestation In Mogadishu's 'Building Boom'
DESCRIPTION:Despite a remarkable post-war building boom and returning diaspora\, Somalia’s capital city remains contested.  Ballooning property values and the refurbishment of public and private spaces continue to embody the politics of urban belonging\, memory and violence of the past three decades. \n  \nSurer Mohamed is a David and Elaine Potter Cambridge Trust Scholar and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada Doctoral Fellow at the Department of Politics and International Studies\, University of Cambridge. \n  \nAdditional co-sponsor: Department of History

SUMMARY:Egyptian Rule and Canaanite Resistance as Seen from Jaffa: ARCE Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The excavations of the Egyptian New Kingdom fortress in Jaffa\, on the southern side of Tel Aviv were undertaken from 1956 to 2014. It was the only Egyptian fortress excavated in Canaan. Its archaeological record\, particularly the evidence from several dramatic destructions\, provides a unique perspective on Egyptian rule and local resistance to it from ca. 1460 to 1125 B.C. The archaeological evidence\, taken together with textual sources\, yields a picture of Canaanite resistance to the Egyptian military presence in Jaffa. This originated in centers located throughout the coastal plain and persisted for several centuries. This talk is drawn from excavations directed by the author and undertaken by the Jaffa Cultural Heritage Project between 2011 and 2014. Dr. Aaron Burke is the Kershaw Chair of Ancient Eastern Mediterranean Studies at UCLA.

SUMMARY:“No One Will Do This For Us” Intellectuals of African Descent and the Nile Valley in the Early 20th Century
DESCRIPTION:The disciplinary history of Egyptology\, as it is currently written\, incorrectly excludes the voices of intellectuals of African descent. In the early 20th century\, when Egyptology was first taught in US universities\, Black scholars and writers and white Egyptologists who held university posts engaged with one another over matters related to Egypt\, ancient and modern. These conversations must be recognized as integral to the formation of the discipline in the United States and to its future. Vanessa Davies is the founding organizer of the Nile Valley Collective\, which promotes the Africanity of the ancient NileValley cultures. She is writing a book on the contributions of scholars of African descent in the US to the disciplinary histories of Egyptology and Nubiology. She is the author of Peace in Ancient Egypt\, the co-editor of The Oxford Handbook of Egyptian Epigraphy and Palaeography\, and the editor of The Phoebe A. Hearst Expedition to Naga ed-Deir\, Cemeteries N 2000 and N2500. \nONLINE MEETING LINK: us02web.zoom.us…

SUMMARY:P&P Live!: Marc Lamont Hill and Mitchell Plitnick — Except for Palestine: The Limits of Progressive Politics
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, February 19\, 2021 – 6 p.m.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event will be streamed online as part of our P&P Live! Series. \nA bold call for the American Left to extend their politics to the issues of Israel-Palestine\, from a New York Times bestselling author and experts on U.S. policy in the region. \nHill and Plitnick provide a timely and essential intervention by examining multiple dimensions of the Israeli-Palestinian conversation\, including Israel’s growing disdain for democracy\, the effects of occupation on Palestine\, the siege of Gaza\, diminishing American funding for Palestinian relief\, and the campaign to stigmatize any critique of Israeli occupation. Except for Palestine is a searing polemic and a cri de coeur for elected officials\, activists\, and everyday citizens alike to align their beliefs and politics with their values. \nMARC LAMONT HILL is an award-winning journalist and the Steve Charles Professor of Media\, Cities\, and Solutions at Temple University. He is the author of multiple books\, including the New York Times bestselling Nobody\, and co-author (with Mitchell Plitnick) of Except for Palestine (The New Press). His newest book\, We Still Here: Pandemic\, Policing\, Protest\, and Possibility is a timely intervention into the popular movement for police abolition. He’s featured speaking for The Root here. \nMITCHELL PLITNICK\, the president of ReThinking Foreign Policy\, is a political analyst and a frequent writer on the Middle East and U.S. foreign policy. His past roles include vice president of the Foundation for Middle East Peace\, director of the U.S. Office of B’Tselem\, and co-director of Jewish Voice for Peace.

SUMMARY:Beyond the Two State Solution: Book Talk and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Jonathan Kuttab’s new book is a short introduction to the crisis in Palestine-Israel\, which has been characterized by the competing visions of Zionism and Palestinian nationalism. While many thought the two-state solution would offer a resolution\, Jonathan explains that the two-state solution (that he supported) is no longer viable. He suggests that any solution be predicated on the basic existential needs of the two parties\, which he lays out in exceptional detail. He formulates a way forward for a one-state solution that challenges both Zionism and Palestinian nationalism. This book invites readers to begin a new conversation based on reality: two peoples will need to live together in some sort of unified state. It is balanced and accessible to neophytes and to experts alike. \nZoom Registration
