SUMMARY:The Book of Genocides: Dana Mashoian Walrath
DESCRIPTION:Dana Mashoian Walrath discusses her new book The Book of Genocides\, a haunting graphic narrative that compels readers to confront the most harrowing chapters of human history not as distant events but as visceral experiences.\n\n\nRegistration is not required\, but helps us anticipate audience size. If you’d like to RSVP\, please do so here! \nIn this haunting graphic narrative\, an award-winning writer\, artist\, and descendant of genocide survivors brings history’s darkest horrors to life\, calling on us to remember\, repair\, and resist. \nDana Mashoian Walrath covers ten major atrocities across five centuries: the mass slaughter of the First Peoples of the Americas\, the brutalization of Black Americans\, the devastation of Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islanders\, the Armenian genocide\, the Holocaust\, the Cambodian killing fields\, the Rwandan genocide\, the Bosnian genocide\, the deadly persecution of the Rohingya in Myanmar\, and the genocide in Gaza. \nWalrath makes plain that the purpose of genocide is always a land grab\, and its central apparatus is dehumanization: each chapter delves into how dehumanization operates\, not just through violence but through the political and intellectual systems that enable it. The book’s unique interactive design allows readers to reshape images of victims into grotesque forms mirroring the mental mechanisms of dehumanization. With each page turn\, the victims’ humanity is restored\, making their suffering undeniable. \nThe Book of Genocides is an unsettling experience\, shot through with the emotional gravity of horrific events—not just historical memories but ongoing realities\, painful truths that shape our world and demand our action. \nDana Mashoian Walrath is a writer\, artist\, and anthropologist. Her award-winning works include Aliceheimer’s\, a graphic memoir about her mother’s dementia journey\, and Like Water on Stone\, a verse novel about the Armenian genocide. Her comics\, art\, essays\, and poetry have been featured by The Nation\, The Lancet\, Slate\, and NPR. Dana Mashoian Walrath lives in Vermont

SUMMARY:Elena Dudum w/ Ijeoma Oluo: They Told Me Back Home Would Be Beautiful
DESCRIPTION:In her Palestinian Christian home in San Francisco\, Elena Dudum was raised in a household ruled by her father’s lectures. He taught her everything: the story of her grandparents’ flight from their homeland\, the history of her family’s orange groves\, and the facts of the ongoing occupation of Palestine. Above all\, he taught her not to forget. Soon his lessons consumed her childhood\, and Elena found herself shrinking from an inheritance that felt both sacred and suffocating. \nFor years\, she resisted it all until a family trip to Palestine shattered the abstraction of her homeland. Checkpoints\, razed olive groves\, soldiers—it was all plainly in front of her\, as were the ghosts of her family’s past. What was once always just out of reach\, now pressed against her body. Back in the United States\, something in her quietly unraveled. She tried to outrun what she now knew by burying herself in elite institutions and the rising world of tech\, where ambition was rewarded and history was inconvenient. \nEventually\, the inheritance she thought she could escape demanded reckoning. \nBraiding rich personal narrative with archival fragments and cultural critique\, They Told Me Back Home Would Be Beautiful traces one woman’s journey as she returns—slowly\, deliberately—to her father’s lessons\, determined to claim them on her own terms. \nElena Dudum is a Palestinian American writer whose work has appeared in The Atlantic\, Time\, Cosmopolitan\, and Bon Appétit\, among others. In 2025\, she was awarded the Whiting Nonfiction Grant for Works-in-Progress for early chapters in They Told Me Back Home Would Be Beautiful. Her work has been supported by The de Groot Foundation\, Tin House\, the Sewanee Writers’ Conference\, and Hedgebrook. Born in San Francisco\, she now divides her time between New York and London. They Told Me Back Home Would Be Beautiful is her first book. \nIjeoma Oluo is a Seattle-based writer\, speaker\, and internet yeller. She is the author of the #1 New York Times bestselling first book\, So You Want To Talk About Race\, Mediocre\, and Be a Revolution. Her work on race and gender has been published in the New York Times\, the Washington Post\, and NBC News; and she has been featured on The Daily Show and NPR’s All Things Considered. Named on the TIME 100 Next list and The Root 100\, she’s been awarded the Harvard Humanist of the Year Award\, the American Humanist Association’s Feminist Humanist Award\, Gender Justice League’s Media Justice Award\, and the Equal Opportunity Institute’s Aubrey Davis Visionary Leadership Award.

SUMMARY:Town Hall Seattle and the Aysenur Ezgi Eygi Memorial Lecture present Rozina Ali with Aria Fani and Sumayyah Waheed
DESCRIPTION:Town Hall Seattle and the Aysenur Ezgi Eygi Memorial Lecture present a book talk by Rozina Ali\, author of Seasons of Fury. Ali’s recently published book tells the story of four Muslim families as they navigated the institutionalization of Islamophobia in the post 9/11 US. The event features a pre-show Art Bazaar that displays the creative output and diversity of Muslim and Muslim inspired artists. \nAbout Seasons of Fury \nRozina Ali shows how the War on Terror\, conceived in the wake of the September 11 attacks\, only accelerated long-standing conflicts between American law enforcement and Muslim communities around the country. From the surveillance of Arab activists that began in the 1960s and laws in the 90s that broadened the definition of terrorism\, to the mass detention of entire Muslim communities in the 2000s and the rise of think tanks and nonprofits that sowed panic about the threat of Islam itself\, Seasons of Fury shows that the history of policies that have warped the American perception of Muslim communities reaches deep into our past. \nThrough the stories of four families across eight decades\, Ali narrates a range of Muslim experiences shaped by relentless suspicion and prejudice. Introducing readers to Abdeen Jabara\, Mohammad Ali Chaudry\, Shahina and Matin Siraj\, and the pseudonymous Omar family\, she shows how fears about American Muslims have always been inextricable from the Israel–Palestine conflict\, stoking the idea of a religious war between Muslims and the West. \nUltimately\, the U.S. government’s Islamophobic policies disillusioned generations of Muslims who sought the promise of the American dream only to find their communities torn apart\, their relatives imprisoned\, and their religion villainized by politicians and media. Ali’s story of how we got to our terrifying present is a magisterial accomplishment and a damning indictment of the United States’ abandonment of its core principles in the face of fear. \n\n\nRead More\n\n\nPanelists \nRozina Ali is a journalist and contributing writer at The New York Times Magazine. Her reporting focuses on the War on Terror\, Islamophobia\, the Middle East\, South Asia\, and literature. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker\, Harper’s\, Foreign Affairs\, The Nation\, and The American Prospect\, among other publications. Previously\, she served on the editorial staff of The New Yorker and as a senior editor at The Cairo Review of Global Affairs in Cairo\, Egypt.
