SUMMARY:Conditional Citizens: Laila Lalami in conversation with Alexander Key
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to be American? In this starkly illuminating and impassioned book\, Pulitzer Prize Finalist Laila Lalami recounts her unlikely journey from Moroccan immigrant to U.S. citizen\, using it as a starting point for her exploration of the rights\, liberties\, and protections that are traditionally associated with American citizenship. Tapping into history\, politics\, and literature\, she elucidates how accidents of birth–such as national origin\, race\, or gender–that once determined the boundaries of Americanness still cast their shadows today. Throughout the book\, she poignantly illustrates how white supremacy survives through adaptation and legislation\, with the result that a caste system is maintained\, keeping the modern equivalent of white male landowners at the top of the social hierarchy. Conditional citizens\, she argues\, are all the people whom America embraces with one arm\, and pushes away with the other. Brilliantly argued and deeply personal\, Conditional Citizens weaves together the author’s own experiences with explorations of the place of nonwhites in the broader American culture.

SUMMARY:Club Book Author Series: Laila Lalami
DESCRIPTION:Moroccan American novelist Laila Lalami uses fiction as a vehicle to showcase “overlooked” North African stories and experiences. Notable examples include her 2014 breakout The Moor’s Account\, which reconstructs the journeys of the New World’s first explorer of color. It won the American Book Award and was a Pulitzer Prize finalist. Lalami’s follow-up\, The Other Americans\, centers around the mysterious death of a Moroccan immigrant in California. Equal parts family drama\, murder mystery\, and love story\, The Other Americans was singled out by media as varied as the BBC and BuzzFeed as one of the most anticipated releases of 2019. Lalami’s new release\, Conditional Citizens\, is something of a departure. In this deeply personal exposé\, the author uses her own unlikely immigration story as an entrée for explore the hot-button question: What does it mean to be American? One reviewer noted: “Probing\, unflinching and fiercely intelligent\, Conditional Citizens is a must-read for all of those who have stared\, stunned\, at the shifting terrain of our political landscape and wondered how we got here.” \n**Not clear which time zone this is taking place\, I believe it’s 7pm Central Time.**

SUMMARY:P&P Live!: Diane Nine – My Life With Helen: The Dean of the White House Press Corps Through Her Agent's Eyes
DESCRIPTION:P&P Live!: Diane Nine – My Life With Helen: The Dean of the White House Press Corps Through Her Agent’s Eyes — with Cindy Williams\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSunday\, September 13\, 2020 – 5 p.m EST (2 p.m PST)\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event will be streamed online as part of our P&P Live! Series. \nThere’s no denying that Helen Thomas was a larger-than-life personality\, but more importantly\, she was a trailblazer for women in journalism. Professionally\, she reported on more presidential administrations than anyone in history\, and she rightfully earned her place–front row\, center–as the Dean of the White House Press Corps. However\, later in her life\, Helen made some regrettable comments that subsequently ended her illustrious career and tarnished her reputation. \nIn My Life With Helen\, readers learn for the first time what was going on behind the scenes after Helen’s fall from grace and how Diane struggled to come to terms with the media frenzy that followed. \nDiane S. Nine is a Washington\, D.C.-based literary agent and attorney\, the author of Get Published: A Guide to Literary Tips\, Traps & Truth\, and the president of Nine Speakers\, Inc. \nActress\, writer and producer Cindy Williams has starred in some of the most historical movies and television programs in entertainment history. Her career began in the 1970s in prestigious movies like Travels with My Aunt \, American Graffiti\, and The Conversation. Once she and Penny Marshall played “loose girls” on the hit TV show Happy Days\, the network quickly ordered a spin-off of the dynamic comedy duo. After changing their characters to blue-collar workers in the mid-West\, they made their debut in Laverne & Shirleyin 1976. The show quickly became the most-watched American television program. The show remains in syndication around the world and has a very loyal following of original and new fans. Cindy continues to work in her first love\, the theater\, as she performs in musicals all over the country. She is the author of Shirley\, I Jest. \n  \nInstead of a set ticket price\, we ask that you contribute what you can to support Politics and Prose Bookstore and our virtual event series. We know that everyone has been affected in these trying times\, and we will continue to make our programming accessible to all. That said\, a suggested contribution of $5\, $10\, whatever you can afford\, will go a long way to keep our programming—and our bookstore—afloat as we are forced to adapt to new ways of business.  \nThe other way you can support us is always by purchasing a book from our website. \nWe are so grateful to be surrounded by such a loyal and engaged community and we thank you for your support\, now and always. \nCLICK HERE to join the Live! Event.

SUMMARY:Cancelled: Jim Al-Khalili The World According to Physics
DESCRIPTION:Honesty and doubt are among the core values of physics—the human quest for ever more foundational principles that accurately explain the natural world we see around us. To shed light on some of the most profound insights revealed by modern physics\, scientific communicator Jim Al-Khalili joins us with observations from his book The World According to Physics. Al-Khalili helps us understand what this crucially important science tells us about the universe and the nature of reality itself by walking us through the core concepts of space\, time\, energy\, and matter. He offers an accessible look at the three pillars of modern physics—quantum theory\, relativity\, and thermodynamics—showing how all three must come together if we are ever to have a full understanding of reality. \nUsing poignant examples and thought-provoking analogies\, Al-Khalili illuminates the physics of the extreme cosmic and quantum scales\, the speculative frontiers of the field\, and the physics that underpins our everyday experiences and technologies. Share in the profound adventure of seeking truth in the world around us as Al-Khalili brings us up to speed with the biggest ideas in this fundamental field of science. \nJim Al-Khalili is professor of physics at the University of Surrey. He is one of Britain’s best-known science communicators and has written numerous books\, including Quantum: A Guide for the Perplexed; The House of Wisdom: How Arabic Science Saved Ancient Knowledge and Gave Us the Renaissance; and Life on the Edge: The Coming of Age of Quantum Biology.rum

SUMMARY:A.S. Hamrah at Elliott Bay Book Company
DESCRIPTION:Writer and film critic A.S. Hamrah has many admirers\, including our booksellers at Elliott Bay\, and we’re very excited to have the opportunity to host a conversation with him tonight about his work\, some of which was collected in his book\, The Earth Dies Streaming: Film Writing 2002-2018 (n+1). \n“Hamrah is committed to his ambivalence\, conveying it with a mixture of precision and conviction that will remind you how much more there is to be gleaned from a review than whether a movie is ‘good ’ or ‘bad ’ (even if it’s a movie you happen to deem very good or very bad indeed) . . . A political awareness imbues Hamrah’s criticism without weighing it down. He doesn’t succumb to a leaden moralizing because he pays close attention to the medium he’s writing about\, alert to what he sees and hears.” —Jennifer Szalai\, New York Times. \nA. S. Hamrah has been n+1’s film critic since 2008 and was the editor of the magazine’s film review supplement. He also writes for a number of other publications including Harper’s\, The Baffler\, and Bookforum. He has worked as a movie theater projectionist\, a semiotic brand analyst\, a political pollster\, a football cinematographer\, a zine writer\, and for the film director Raúl Ruiz. \nCo-presented with Seattle International Film Festival. \n  \n\nI couldn’t find Hamrah’s ethinicity on line BUT I am assuming with the last name Hamrah that he must be! (Please let me know if you know otherwise!)

SUMMARY:Malaka Gharib: I Was Their American Dream
DESCRIPTION:I Was Their American Dream is at once a coming-of-age story and a reminder of the thousands of immigrants who come to America in search for a better life for themselves and their children. The daughter of parents with unfulfilled dreams themselves\, Malaka navigated her childhood chasing her parents’ ideals\, learning to code-switch between her family’s Filipino and Egyptian customs\, adapting to white culture to fit in\, crushing on skater boys\, and trying to understand the tension between holding onto cultural values and trying to be an all-American kid. \nMalaka Gharib’s triumphant graphic memoir brings to life her teenage antics and illuminates earnest questions about identity and culture\, while providing thoughtful insight into the lives of modern immigrants and the generation of millennial children they raised. Malaka’s story is a heartfelt tribute to the American immigrants who have invested their future in the promise of the American dream. \nMALAKA GHARIB is an artist\, journalist\, and writer based in Washington\, D.C. She is the founder of The Runcible Spoon\, a food zine\, and the co-founder of the D.C. Art Book Fair. She lives in a row house with her husband Darren and her 9-year-old rice cooker.

SUMMARY:Reclaiming History: A Panel - Brick and Mortar Book Store
DESCRIPTION:Brick and Mortar will be hosting a panel at the end of summer on Reclaiming History\, delving into a range of subjects on the myriad ways marginalized people are erased and why that matters in our fiction. \nThere will be a brilliant group of panelists whose work all touches on this subject in different ways: Olivia Waite (The Lady’s Guide to Celestial Mechanics)\, Somaiya Daud (Mirage)\, Lauren Dane (Whiskey Sharp series)\, Jasmine Silvera (Grace Bloods series)\, and A.J. Hackwith (The Library of the Unwritten). \nFrom forgotten queer and black history to the erasure of women’s work throughout history in artistic and scientific fields\, we hope you’ll join us in interrogating the ways our society has deliberately chosen to remember and represent its history and what that means for us today\, in our world and in our stories.

SUMMARY:Seattle Arts and Lectures: Solmaz Sharif
DESCRIPTION:This is a reading by Solmaz Sharif. \nSharif is the author of the poetry collection LOOK\, a finalist for the National Book Award and the PEN Open Book Award and the winner of the 2017 American Book Award for Poetry. \nSharif’s LOOK\, asks us to see the ongoing costs of war as the unbearable loss of human lives and the insidious abuses against our everyday speech. In this virtuosic array of poems\, lists\, shards\, and sequences\, Sharif assembles her family’s and her own fragmented narratives in the aftermath of warfare. Those repercussions echo into the present day\, in the grief for those killed in America’s invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq\, and in the discrimination endured at the checkpoints of daily encounter.

SUMMARY:Laila Lalami at Seattle Central Public Library
DESCRIPTION:Elliott Bay is delighted to welcome back a favorite writer\, Laila Lalami\, here tonight with a much anticipated new novel\, The Other Americans (Pantheon). A recipient of the American Book Award\, the Arab American Book Award\, the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award\, and a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for her past books – Hope and Other Dangerous Pursuits\, Secret Son\, and The Moor’s Account – she delves into timely territory with this story of the mysterious death of a Moroccan immigrant in the present-day U.S. \n“Remarkable\, timely novel. Impeccably written story about a hit and run\, a family that must grapple with their grief as they try to make sense of why they’ve lost Driss\, the patriarch\, and the slowly unraveling mystery of who is responsible for the unthinkable. I love the depth of character here for Nora and Jeremy. The narrative is good from many points of view but theirs is the heart of this story and what a beautiful beating heart it is.”  —Roxane Gay. \n“This deftly constructed account of a crime and its consequences shows up\, in its quiet way\, the pressures under which ordinary Americans of Muslim background have labored since the events of 9/11.” —J.M. Coetzee. \nFree admission\, no tickets are needed. Co-presented with the SEATTLE PUBLIC LIBRARY at the Seattle Central Library – Level 4 – Room 1 – Washington Mutual Foundation Meeting Room

SUMMARY:YASMIN KHAN: AUTHOR TALK: ZAITOUN
DESCRIPTION:British cook Yasmin Khan unlocks the flavors and fragrances of modern Palestine\, from the sun-kissed pomegranate stalls of Akka\, on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea\, through evergreen oases of date plantations in the Jordan Valley\, to the fading fish markets of Gaza City. In each place she visits\, Khan enters the kitchens of Palestinians of all ages and backgrounds\, discovering the secrets of their cuisine and sharing heartlifting stories. \nPalestinian food is winningly fresh and bright\, centered around colorful mezze dishes that feature the region’s bountiful eggplants\, peppers\, artichokes\, and green beans; slow-cooked stews of chicken and lamb flavored with Palestinian barahat spice blends; and the marriage of local olive oil with earthy za’atar\, served in small bowls to accompany toasted breads. It has evolved over several millennia through the influences of Arabic\, Jewish\, Armenian\, Persian\, Turkish\, and Bedouin cultures and civilizations that have ruled over\, or lived in\, the area known as ancient Palestine. \nWe are thrilled that Yasmin is coming to Book Larder all the way from the UK! Yasmin will share her knowledge and passion about the cuisine of Palestine\, we will make a bite from the book for you to try\, and you can get a signed copy of Zaitoun. Please note the author will sign copies of the book purchased at Book Larder. \nCan’t attend this event but still want a signed copy of the book? Hadi considers Huda his childhood sweetheart\, the first and only girl he’s ever loved\, but Huda needs proof that she is more than just the girl Hadi’s mother has chosen for her son. Tonight Huda Al-Marashi shares the story told in her memoir\, First Comes Marriage: My Not-So-Typical American Love Story (Prometheus).  Come hear her read from parts of her book and answer questions at Elliott Bay Book Company in Seattle.
