SUMMARY:P&P Live!: Diane Nine – My Life With Helen: The Dean of the White House Press Corps Through Her Agent's Eyes
DESCRIPTION:P&P Live!: Diane Nine – My Life With Helen: The Dean of the White House Press Corps Through Her Agent’s Eyes — with Cindy Williams\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSunday\, September 13\, 2020 – 5 p.m EST (2 p.m PST)\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event will be streamed online as part of our P&P Live! Series. \nThere’s no denying that Helen Thomas was a larger-than-life personality\, but more importantly\, she was a trailblazer for women in journalism. Professionally\, she reported on more presidential administrations than anyone in history\, and she rightfully earned her place–front row\, center–as the Dean of the White House Press Corps. However\, later in her life\, Helen made some regrettable comments that subsequently ended her illustrious career and tarnished her reputation. \nIn My Life With Helen\, readers learn for the first time what was going on behind the scenes after Helen’s fall from grace and how Diane struggled to come to terms with the media frenzy that followed. \nDiane S. Nine is a Washington\, D.C.-based literary agent and attorney\, the author of Get Published: A Guide to Literary Tips\, Traps & Truth\, and the president of Nine Speakers\, Inc. \nActress\, writer and producer Cindy Williams has starred in some of the most historical movies and television programs in entertainment history. Her career began in the 1970s in prestigious movies like Travels with My Aunt \, American Graffiti\, and The Conversation. Once she and Penny Marshall played “loose girls” on the hit TV show Happy Days\, the network quickly ordered a spin-off of the dynamic comedy duo. After changing their characters to blue-collar workers in the mid-West\, they made their debut in Laverne & Shirleyin 1976. The show quickly became the most-watched American television program. The show remains in syndication around the world and has a very loyal following of original and new fans. Cindy continues to work in her first love\, the theater\, as she performs in musicals all over the country. She is the author of Shirley\, I Jest. \n  \nInstead of a set ticket price\, we ask that you contribute what you can to support Politics and Prose Bookstore and our virtual event series. We know that everyone has been affected in these trying times\, and we will continue to make our programming accessible to all. That said\, a suggested contribution of $5\, $10\, whatever you can afford\, will go a long way to keep our programming—and our bookstore—afloat as we are forced to adapt to new ways of business.  \nThe other way you can support us is always by purchasing a book from our website. \nWe are so grateful to be surrounded by such a loyal and engaged community and we thank you for your support\, now and always. \nCLICK HERE to join the Live! Event.

SUMMARY:Laila Lalami with Viet Thanh Nguyen (livestream) Conditional Citizens
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to be an American? Author Laila Lalami joins us via livestream to discuss this question in conversation with fellow author Viet Thanh Nguyen. Drawing from her book Conditional Citizen\, she recounts her unlikely journey from Moroccan immigrant to US citizen\, using it as a starting point for her exploration of the rights\, liberties\, and protections that are traditionally associated with American citizenship. Tapping into history\, politics\, and literature\, she interrogates how white supremacy survives through adaptation and legislation\, keeping the modern equivalent of white male landowners at the top of the social hierarchy. With deeply personal stories\, Lalami invites us to explore the place of nonwhites in the broader American culture.\n\n\n\nLaila Lalami was born in Rabat and educated in Morocco\, Great Britain\, and the United States. She is the author of four award-winning novels: Secret Son\, Hope and Other Dangerous Pursuits\, The Other Americans\, and The Moor’s Account. Her essays have appeared in the Los Angeles Times\, The Washington Post\, The Nation\, Harper’s\, The Guardian\, and The New York Times. Lalami is a professor of creative writing at the University of California at Riverside. You can follow her on Twitter @LailaLalami. \nViet Thanh Nguyen is a writer\, whose novel The Sympathizer won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. He has written and edited a number of other works\, and is a contributing opinion writer for the New York Times. He is an English professor at the University of Southern California. You can follow him on Twitter @viet_t_nguyen.
