SUMMARY:The Lives Along the Nile (5 series class)
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to another series in attempting to better understand the Middle East and North Africa yet\, this time we are traveling south to north with the Nile River. We will go on an expedition (no need for passport\, inoculations or tents for camping or visas) from the origins of Nile to the Mediterranean Sea. We will read history books\, journalists’ accounts and novelists describe the river and the inhabitants along its banks. Join us on this journey along the Nile River. According to the National Geographic: “The Nile River flows from south to north through eastern Africa. It begins in the rivers that flow into Lake Victoria (located in modern-day Uganda\, Tanzania\, and Kenya)\, and empties into the Mediterranean Sea more than 6\,600 kilometers (4\,100 miles) to the north\, making it one of the longest rivers in the world. The Nile River was critical to the development of ancient Egypt. In addition to Egypt\, the Nile runs through or along the border of 10 other African countries\, namely\, Burundi\, Tanzania\, Rwanda\, the Democratic Republic of the Congo\, Kenya\, Uganda\, Sudan\, Ethiopia\, and South Sudan. Its three main tributaries are the White Nile\, the Blue Nile\, and the Atbara.” \nFive Mondays: January 23\, February 6 and 20\, March 6 and 27 from 1 to 3 p.m. ET Online \n1. 23rd January 2023: River of the Gods – Genius\, Courage\, and Betrayal in the search for the source of the Nile by Candice Millard (9780385543101) \n2. 6th February: The Black Nile by Dan Morrison (9780143119371) \n3. 20th February: God Dies by the Nile by Nawal al Saadawy (9781783605965) \n4. 6th March: Adrift on the Nile by Naguib Mahfouz (9780385423335) \n5. 27th March: Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie (9780063139848) \nAND/OR \nThe Fugitives by Jamal Mahjoub (9781838850821)

SUMMARY:Iraqi Book Club | Fifteen Iraqi Poets: Dunya Mikhail
DESCRIPTION:We are a community group of people who have a relationship with Iraq. Some of us were born there\, some of our parents were born there\, some have lived and worked there and some are just curious. \nTogether\, we aim to share our ✨ stories about Iraq and meet new people in a supportive environment. We do this by talking about books. \nWe talk about books written by Iraqi authors\, both 📚 non-fiction and fiction. We like to read traditionally 💪 minority voices\, like those of women\, religious minorities and people who are queer. We do this so we can get the full picture of what it means to live in 🇮🇶 Iraq. \nWe meet every other month online to learn and get to know new people. Every so often we have a get-together in person somewhere in the UK. All sessions are appropriate for anyone with an open mind and heart\, of any ethnicity and background!

SUMMARY:Hidayah Virtual Book Club for LGBTQ+ Muslims and allies
DESCRIPTION:Hidayah presents our Virtual Book Club\, a place for LGBTQ+ Muslims and allies to read\, discuss books and socialise. \n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nIn this book club\, we will discuss the latest chosen title\, We Wrote in Symbols: Love and Lust by Arab Women Writers\, edited by Selma Dabbagh. \nIt is a little-known secret that Arabic literature has a long tradition of erotic writing. Behind that secret lies another – that many of the writers are women. We Wrote in Symbols celebrates the works of 75 of these female writers of Arab heritage who articulate love and lust with artistry and skill. \nHere\, a wedding night takes an unexpected turn beneath a canopy of stars; a woman on the run meets her match in a flirtatious encounter at Dubai Airport; and a carnal awakening occurs in a Palestinian refugee camp. From a masked rendezvous in a circus\, to meetings in underground bars and unmade beds\, there is no such thing as a typical sexual encounter\, as this electrifying anthology shows. Powerfully conveying the complexities and intrigues of desire\, We Wrote in Symbols invites you to share these characters’ wildest fantasies and most intimate moments. \nTo get the most out of the session\, please ensure you have read the book ahead of time. We will be getting in to the key themes and how they represent what it is to be an LGBTQ+ Muslim/person of colour. \nWe have partnered with an LGBTQI+ founded and run bookstore – The Bookish Type\, who have kindly provided a 20% discount for any Hidayah Book Club members who wish to purchase each of our titles\, via their online and retail stores. Details will be provided with the order confirmation to each Hidayah Book Club event. \nIf you have any questions in the meantime\, please email Deenah on programs@hidayahlgbt.co.uk.

SUMMARY:Candid Conversations with Susan Abulhawa
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 21\, 2021 \n8:00 PM  9:00 PM (BST) – 12:00 PM 1:00PM (PST) \nGoogle Calendar  ICS \n\nNahr has been confined to the Cube: nine square metres of glossy grey cinderblock\, devoid of time\, its patterns of light and dark nothing to do with day and night. Journalists visit her\, but get nowhere; because Nahr is not going to share her story with them. The world outside calls Nahr a terrorist\, and a whore; some might call her a revolutionary\, or a hero. But the truth is\, Nahr has always been many things\, and had many names. She was a girl who learned\, early and painfully\, that when you are a second class citizen love is a kind of desperation; she learned\, above all else\, to survive.

SUMMARY:Virtual Event: Shugri Said Salh with Mathangi Subramanian — The Last Nomad
DESCRIPTION:Third Place Books welcomes author Shugri Said Salh for a presentation of her debut memoir\, The Last Nomad: Coming of Age in the Somali Desert. She will be joined in conversation award-winning writer and educator Dr. Mathangi Subramanian. \n  \nAbout The Last Nomad. . .\n“I am the last nomad. My ancestors traveled the East African desert in search of grazing land for their livestock\, and the most precious resource of all—water. When they exhausted the land and the clouds disappeared from the horizon\, their accumulated ancestral knowledge told them where to move next to find greener pastures. They loaded their huts and belongings onto their most obedient camels and herded their livestock to a new home.” \nWhen Shugri Said Salh was six years old\, she was sent to live with her nomadic grandmother in the desert\, away from the city of Galkayo. Leaving behind her house\, her parents\, her father’s multiple wives\, and her many siblings\, she would become the last of her family to learn a once-common way of life. The desert held many risks\, from drought and hunger to the threat of predators\, but it also held beauty\, innovation\, and centuries of tradition. Shugri grew to love the freedom of roaming with her goats and the feeling of community in learning the courtship rituals\, cooking songs\, and poems of her people. She was even proud to face the rite of passage that all “respectable” girls undergo in Somalia\, a brutal female circumcision. \nIn time\, Shugri would return to live with her siblings in the city. Ultimately\, the family was forced to flee as refugees in the face of a civil war—first to Kenya\, then to Canada\, and finally to the United States. There\, Shugri would again find herself a nomad in a strange land\, learning to navigate everything from escalators to homeless shelters to\, ultimately\, marriage\, parenthood\, and nursing school. And she would approach each step of her journey with resilience and a liveliness that is all her own. \nAt once dramatic and witty\, The Last Nomad tells a story of tradition\, change\, and hope.

SUMMARY:Palestinian Virtual Pop-up Book Club: MINOR DETAIL by Adania Shibli
DESCRIPTION:Please click here to register for this event. \nJoin writers Susan Muaddi Darraj and Sahar Mustafah in conversation about Minor Detail\, the critically acclaimed novel by Palestinian author Adania Shibli. Her book was a 2020 finalist for the National Book Translation Award and longlisted for The International Booker Prize. Minor Detail is this year’s One Book\, Many Communities selection by Librarians and Archivists with Palestine. Celebrate by reading the book and joining the discussion. \nBook Synopsis\nMinor Detail begins during the summer of 1949\, one year after the war that the Palestinians mourn as the Nakba–the catastrophe that led to the displacement and exile of some 700\,000 people–and the Israelis celebrate as the War of Independence. Israeli soldiers murder an encampment of Bedouin in the Negev desert\, and among their victims they capture a Palestinian teenager and they rape her\, kill her\, and bury her in the sand. Many years later\, in the near-present day\, a young woman in Ramallah tries to uncover some of the details surrounding this particular rape and murder\, and becomes fascinated to the point of obsession\, not only because of the nature of the crime\, but because it was committed exactly twenty-five years to the day before she was born. Adania Shibli masterfully overlays these two translucent narratives of exactly the same length to evoke a present forever haunted by the past. And now\, that guide is a published book. Me and White Supremacy leads readers through a journey of understanding their white privilege and participation in white supremacy\, so that they can stop (often unconsciously) inflicting damage on Black\, Indigenous and people of color\, and in turn\, help other white people do better\, too. The book goes beyond the original workbook by adding more historical and cultural contexts\, sharing moving stories and anecdotes\, and includes expanded definitions\, examples\, and further resources.  \nABOUT THE AUTHOR\nLayla Saad is a globally respected writer\, speaker and podcast host on the topics of race\, identity\, leadership\, personal transformation and social change. As an East African\, Arab\, British\, Black\, Muslim woman who was born and grew up in the West\, and lives in Middle East\, she has always sat at a unique intersection of identities from which she is able to draw rich and intriguing perspectives. Saad’s work is driven by her powerful desire to ‘become a good ancestor’; to live and work in ways that leave a legacy of healing and liberation for those who will come after she is gone. She earned her Bachelor of Law degree from Lancaster University in the United Kingdom.
