SUMMARY:Mary Ann Peters: the edge becomes the center
DESCRIPTION:The following description comes from the event organizer. \nSeattle artist Mary Ann Peters (born 1949\, Beaumont\, Texas) has attended to overlooked narratives for almost forty years\, interpreting her research through mediums including painting\, sculpture\, and installation. Peters unearths hidden diasporic histories\, often through travel\, and contextualizes them within her experiences of the contemporary Middle East as a second-generation Lebanese American. the edge becomes the center brings together the artist’s series this trembling turf for the first time and presents it alongside a new installation—works that together surface the ways forgotten and repressed pasts shape present experience. \nthis trembling turf features ten abstract drawings\, including one from the Frye’s collection\, which the artist crafts by applying thin strokes of white ink to black clayboard. The series interprets natural habitats where activity occurs beneath the surface\, with rhythmic patterns referencing sound waves used by archaeologists to uncover buried traces of civilization. These intricate drawings imagine the missing records of populations and cultures physically covered over\, reminding us that forgotten histories could be buried below us\, lost within our collective memory. \nThe exhibition’s new site-specific installation continues the artist’s ongoing impossible monuments series\, works of disparate materials and forms that memorialize disregarded details of socio-political events. Peters writes\, “I define an impossible monument as something that deserves reverence but by virtue of its incidental nature would never be elevated to the status of a monument.” Together\, these bodies of work ask viewers to consider which narratives are written into history and which are erased.

SUMMARY:Mercer Island Art Walk: SZ Gallery: I'm Still Alive
DESCRIPTION:During this (Frist) Friday MI Art Walk\, stop by the SZ Gallery with a spirit of empathy & sense of curiosity\, as you explore and learn from Palestinian and Arab Artists. \nIn gratitude for and collaboration with the Zawyeh Gallery\, SZ Gallery commits to giving voice to Palestinians and their experiences\, focusing on their humanity\, through creative expressions of art & culture. \nAfter losing his home and studio in Gaza City in October\, Maisara Baroud began drawing his diaries under the devastating Israeli genocidal war. He hasn’t ceased drawing since losing his “personal little world” to destruction\, along with all his paintings\, tools\, books\, and precious memories. Through his paintings\, he documents displacement\, brutal bombardment\, the fear of loss\, and the anxiety of protecting loved ones. Baroud says\, “I draw to tell my friends that I am still alive.” – Excerpt by Rana Anani \n

SUMMARY:Mercer Island Art Walk: SZ Gallery
DESCRIPTION:During this (Frist) Friday MI Art Walk\, stop by the SZ Gallery with a spirit of empathy & sense of curiosity\, as you explore and learn from Palestinian and Arab Artists. \n“Posters for Gaza” sheds light on the humanitarian crisis taking place in Gaza and demands recognition for Palestinian rights. This exhibit follows two previous shows\, “We Are Palestine\,” which touched on universal themes of the Holy Land and focused on humanizing the Palestinian people. “PALESTINE: Tracing Boundaries” focused more on architecture and featured Jerusalem (Al-Quds) through architectural interpretations\, in addition to the impacts of imposed walls and boundary edges on the lives of the indigenous people. \n Suzanne Zahr\, Art & Architecture | SZ Gallery \n2441 76th Ave SE\, Suite 160 Mercer Island\, WA \n (First) Friday\, May 3\, 5-8PM \n **FREE** ALL are welcome! \nIn this unique exhibition\, twenty-six artists come together to raise their voices\, through a series of posters produced specifically for this exhibition. The posters shed light on the ethnic cleansing and horrific massacres taking place in the Gaza Strip – possibly the worst in modern history – demanding the recognition of Palestinian rights to live freely on their land with dignity. \nRepresenting a long tradition in Palestinian history\, political posters were produced extensively in the seventies and the eighties by the Palestinian Liberation Organization with the contribution of Palestinian\, Arab\, and international artists. Posters played a crucial role in supporting the justice of the Palestinian cause and promoting it globally guided by the freedom\, dignity\, resilience\, and the ongoing aspiration for independence\, sought by Palestinians. \nUniformly sized and designed in a simplified manner\, the posters of each artist reflect their uniqueness in terms of style\, materials\, and the underlying narratives. Steering away from the digital norm\, participating artists poured their effort into producing those posters utilizing a variety of materials including acrylics\, inks\, charcoal\, collage\, and mixed media on paper\, while some artists employed various digital design techniques.

SUMMARY:Art Reception & Vigil
DESCRIPTION:Art Reception & Vigil: Friday\, March 1st\, 5 – 8PM\nPoetry\, warm tea & comfort food will be served.\nSilent Vigil.\nThe future is dark. Is this darkness of the tomb – or of the womb? It is both. In all the death and destruction around us\, I believe we must find the audacity to lift our gaze and witness the emergence of the new – millions waking to our shared humanity\, coming together to grieve and imagine otherwise. In us\, I see glimpses of the world waiting to be born. I choose to labor for that world\, with you. Let’s last. \nTonight we breathe\, tomorrow we push. \n– Valerie Kaur

SUMMARY:Rajaa Gharbi\, Selected Works: Exhibition by Rajaa Gharbi
DESCRIPTION:VISUAL ART Every Thursday–Saturday\, from November 2–December 2 12–5 pm \nFeaturing original acrylic paintings and prints from several previous solo exhibitions\, artist Rajaa Gharbi‘s exhibition\, Rajaa Gharbi\, Selected Works is largely inspired by a sense of realism and the need for collective\, life-nurturing visions and practices. \nGharbi’s works are never about just one or two themes. Among her earliest and indelible art influences and “training” grounds were her mother’s clothing designs\, her father’s storytelling feats\, her native city’s omnipresent visual worlds of hand-weaving arts\, first centuries BCE monumental representational mosaic “paintings”\, and the vestiges of a bygone Roman Empire. Visual storytelling and ancient scripts have held her focus since childhood. There\, the first waves of infinite geometric designs and limitless color palettes permeated her psyche. Hopping around or staring at the fallen or still standing marble statues of all sizes\, texts hand-engraved on steles\, and very young olive trees cracking life open right through ancient fallen columns in her native Carthage\, Tunisia and across North Africa are still among her sources of inspiration. She is also inhabited and taught by the geographic and human landscapes of the American Northwest.
