DESCRIPTION:Seattle artist Jenna Eady will be in residency at Base for three weeks in January\, in collaboration with her father\, Palestinian playwright and director Hanna Eady. Join us on January 19 at 5pm for an open house with Jenna and Hanna at Base! \nWorking in collaboration\, the Eadys use text\, movement and sound design to create environments for experiential story telling. As Palestinian artists they focus their content on personal experience while uplifting the voices of their community. In their newest project\, FLOOD\, they draw the parallels between modern day refugees and biblical stories. \nFor three uninterrupted weeks\, Base Resident Artists dive deep into their practices\, using 24/7 access to Base for development\, self-challenge and experimentation. I am so excited to exhibit at Marmot Art Space in Kendall Yards ! I’ve shown all over the world\, including London\, New York\, Cairo\, Paris\, Bethlehem\, Jerusalem\, Chicago\, Los Angeles\, Boston\, Dallas\, Denver\, San Francisco\, Ramallah\, Brighton\, Amman\, Doha\, Delhi\, Rome\, etc. Now I will add Spokane to the list. See you Friday\, December 6th. Doors open officially at 5pm! \n  \nWHO: Manal is the Resident Artist at Workhouse Arts Center in Virginia. She’s shown all over the world\, including London\, New York\, Cairo\, Paris\, Bethlehem\, Jerusalem\, Chicago\, Los Angeles\, Boston\, Ramallah\, Brighton\, Delhi\, Rome\, etc. \nMORE: Manal has been interviewed by many US and international journals\, magazines & TV channels. Art critic Mark Jensen in the Washington Post: Manal Deeb “superimposes photographs\, calligraphy and fabric patterns on her face\, constructing a visual metaphor for how women’s identities are overlaid with societal expectations and political circumstances\,” blending realism and abstraction. DESCRIPTION:This gallery is closed due to COVID-19 until further notice.\n\nThis group exhibition engages artists whose work addresses narratives\, communities\, and histories that are typically hidden or invisible in our public space (both conceptually and literally defined). The presenting artists approach the exhibition’s theme from a range of directions\, varying across all media as well as aesthetic and conceptual contexts. DESCRIPTION:“I work from the premise that images are never neutral and that they sustain layered meaning from the inception of an idea to the completed piece. Historical narratives\, architecture\, science\, personal heritage\, politics and questions of perception have all played a part in my thinking over the years.  I look for seemingly disparate elements that can coalesce and redefine a topic.  I have traveled extensively\, most frequently in non-Western cultures. Traveling has informed my understanding of the global roots of aesthetics. It consistently defines for me those social practices that provide outlines for cultural inquiry\, including which ethical questions should be considered or supported. In the end I work to the afterimage of the viewer and the potential discourse that might ensue.  The kiss of death for any artist is the work that no one can remember.” \n– Mary Ann Peters \nMary Ann Peters lives and works in Seattle\, WA  She received an MFA from the University of Washington in 1978. She has received numerous awards including an Art Matters Foundaton Grant\, New York that allowed her to travel to Paris and Mexico City to research the migration from the Middle East after World War II\, a grant from The New Foundation\, Seattle in 2014\,  a MacDowell Fellowship in 2010\, a Jentel residency in 2009\, the Northwest Institute of Architecture & Urban Studies in Italy (NIAUSI) residency in 2003 and the Neddy Fellowship from the Behnke Foundation in 2000. Collections include Microsoft\, Seattle Art Museum\, 4Culture\, Tacoma Art Museum\, and others.
