DESCRIPTION:Begins September 10 (Saturdays at 12pm EST) \nInspired by the infamous book by Margarita Skinner\, “A Treasury of Stitches”\, this program honors the various needle working techniques of historic Palestine beyond the cross-stitch. “A Treasury of Palestinian Stitches” program is a creative independent project\, where students participate in a six-part virtual course teaching the traditional stitches practiced by Palestinians for centuries\, learning the correct implementation and use of each stitch. \nThe course series covers 10 traditional stitches\, including couching stitch (tahriri and rasheq)\, satin stitch\, habka stitch\, sabalah stitch\, managel stitch\, two types of back-stitch\, double buttonhole stitch\, buttonhole wheel. This legacy has deeply influenced her career\, becoming a leading educator in the field\, the first-ever Palestinian embroidery instructor at the Smithsonian Museum\, and collections specialist at the Museum of the Palestinian People in Washington\, D.C. Wafa continues her mother’s educational legacy through Tatreez & Tea\, a global arts education initiative that she established in 2016. Tatreez & Tea’s mission is to educate and empower exiled Palestinians of their heritage as well as to cultivate and strengthen allyship with non-Palestinians around the world. \nEmbroidery\, or tatreez\, is a centuries-old practice preserved through intergenerational exchange over a cup of tea\, or shay. DESCRIPTION:Following the success of Amado Alfadni’s ‘Alternative Museum of the Sudan’ the exhibition has been extended and will remain on display at Sulger-Buel Gallery until the 31st of August 2022 and viewing is available by appointment only. \nThis solo exhibition highlights Alfadni’s deep research-based investigations into the forgotten silenced histories of the Sudan. The artist utilizes oral archives\, postcards\, photographs\, performances\, and mixed-media costumes to reveal the complex relationship between colonialism and Black Africa\, as well as the intermingled histories of Black Africa\, Egypt\, and North Africa. \nAbout the artist:\nBorn in 1976 in Cairo\, Amado Alfadni’s childhood was composed of two distinct environments: the Cairene Street and the Sudanese home. The relationship and the tension between these two cultures strongly influenced his views\, making him question the subject of identity with its related rhetoric\, as well as the variables of nation and ethnicity in his work. By working with forgotten historical events and referring to the current state of things\, he challenges the power dynamics between the individual and authority on both the social and political levels. He gives a voice to the ethnic minority\, with a focus on research and documentation of ignored happenings. \nAbout the curator:\nNajlaa El-Ageli\, an architect (AA Dip) with over twenty years of experience in the profession\, founded Noon Arts Projects in 2012. A small private arts foundation\, with a mission to bring the best of contemporary art from the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region\, from both emerging and established artists\, and expose it to the world stage. Collaborating with art venues and foundations\, she has curated over 20 exhibitions in the UK\, Spain\, Malta\, Italy\, and the US. \n

SUMMARY:Dreams Rising Artist Talk: Gaza Artists Malak Al-Absy and Mohammed Qraiqe
DESCRIPTION:Palestinian children in the Gaza Strip as young as 14 years old have endured four major Israeli military offensives. They live under an Israeli military blockade which controls who goes where and when\, which goods can enter and exit Gaza\, and which patients can seek specialized health care abroad. And yet\, they are dreaming of a better future. \nThe Museum of the Palestinian People is pleased to introduce a new exhibition that invites visitors to imagine a better future for Palestinian children in Gaza. Working with a team of youth specialists\, curator Ahmed Mansour asked children to paint a vision of their future. \nThe exhibition was envisioned and created in memory of the 67 Palestinian children killed in the May 2021 Israeli military offensive on the Gaza Strip. The exhibition features artwork created by 11 child and youth artists in Gaza in collaboration with Sama Center for Art and Culture. \nThis event is a conversation with two of the young artists featured in the exhibition: 16-year-old Malak Al-Absy and 21-year-old Mohammed Qraiqe. The event will be moderated by Ahmed Mansour\, the curator of Dreams Rising and the director of programs at the Museum of the Palestinian people. \nMalak Al-Absy\, 16\, is a Palestinian artist from Gaza who was born in 2006\, the year before the Israeli blockade closed the Gaza Strip to the rest of the world. Malak has lived through four major Israeli military offensives in the 2008\, 2012\, 2014\, and 2021. She started to paint from a young age and has participated in several local art exhibits in Gaza City. Through art\, Malak tries to explore the idea of love in the war-torn Gaza. \nMohammed Qraiqe\, 21\, is from the Shujaiya neighborhood in Gaza City. His talent as an artist emerged when he was five years old. He was adopted by several art institutes in Gaza before he started making his way to international exhibits. Mohammed has toured Dubai\, Tunis\, Lebanon\, and Chicago with his art. He’s currently finishing his Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science at a university in Norway.

To be released on Tuesday\, 5th April. \nHeike recently exhibited at Dubai Expo 2020\, and launched her book documenting the history of embroidery in the Levant region titled “Anat and her hero Baal – The embroidery language of The Levant”. \nWhen Heike Weber arrived in Syria in 1982\, seeking refuge from the Lebanese civil war\, she fell in love with the country’s capital Damascus.During the years of war\, she braved the mortars and shelling that left their marks on the walls of her home located in a narrow alleyway in the heart of Damascus old city.Now 70\, the German woman vowed to not leave the country and she said she feels a sense of duty to the country she has called home for decades.Married to a Palestinian\, Weber started her life in the Yarmouk camp\, near Damascus\, where she followed her passion for embroidery. The\nexhibition represents expressions from life in Gaza by six Palestinian artists\, whose works defy a brutal Israeli blockade imposed on over two million Palestinians. Crossing states’ boundaries and aerial spaces to reach Turtle Island\, the works affirm Palestinian hope\,\npersistence\, endurance\, and love of art and life. The two hundred drawings and\npaintings are a testament of the power of art\, the power of imagination under bombardment\, and aspiration for a just and peaceful life in a forsaken world.\nMaking art in Gaza is an act of survival\, refusal\, and resistance to unendurable conditions\ninflicted on Palestinians in the largest collective prison on earth. Deprivation of the Palestinian artists in Gaza from their right to freedom of movement\, their right to connect with the rest of the art community and the public in colonized Palestine and beyond has not stopped them from making art. Despite Israel’s prohibition of art material and supplies from entering Gaza\, or prohibiting art from exiting Gaza\, artists continue to create engaging art\, representing their experiences in confinement\, isolation\, and deprivation of basic human rights.\n100% of the sales of the artworks\, ranging in price from $50 to $1500 will be going to the artists and art therapy programs for children in Gaza. DESCRIPTION:Virtual event\nFREE with RSVP \nJoin multimedia artist Alia Ali and musician/composer Tarek Yamani as the two artists of different disciplines interview one another\, discover unexpected connections\, and discuss each of their newest projects commissioned by UMS and AANM. \nAlia Ali (Arabic: عاليه علي // Sabean: ‎ 𐩲𐩱𐩡𐩺𐩲|𐩲𐩱𐩡) is a Yemeni-Bosnian-US multi-media artist. A child of migrant linguists\, Ali has traveled to sixty-seven countries\, lived in and between seven\, and grown-up among five languages. Her migrations have led her to process the world through interactive experiences and the belief that the damage of translation and interpretation of written language has dis-served particular communities\, resulting in the threat of their exclusion\, rather than a means of understanding. As an artist who exists on the borders of identifying as West Asian\, Eastern European\, a United States citizen\, queer\, culturally Muslim yet spiritually independent\, her work explores cultural binaries\, challenges culturally sanctioned oppression\, and confronts the dualistic barriers of conflicted notions of gender\, politics\, media\, and citizenship. Through her practice\, Ali critiques linguistics and inherited political structures and narratives\, while simultaneously attempting to counter the polarization and miscommunication that imperils communities across the world\, encouraging viewers to confront their own prejudices. \nTarek Yamani is an American-Lebanese New York-based composer and a self-taught jazz pianist dedicated to exploring relationships between African-American Jazz and Arabic rhythms/maqams. He is the recipient of awards such as the Givanas Foundation Grant\, Huygens Scholarship\, Andrea Elkenbracht Award\, Prins Bernhard Culture Fund\, Thelonious Monk Composers Competition Prize\, Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Residency\, New Dutch Composition Contest\, and Composer’s Platform Commission by the Abu Dhabi Festival. Tarek has been recently commissioned by UMS (Ann Arbor) to write a new piece for the genre-bending Spektral Quartet to be premiered on October 27th\, as part of the UMS Digital Artist Residency.

SUMMARY:Diana Al-Hadid: Archive of Longings:  Exhibition at the Henry Art Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Diana Al-Hadid’s work explores the interplay between the female body and the European art canon; Syrian\, Muslim\, and immigrant histories and mythologies; and architectural icons and the natural world. Born in 1981 in Aleppo\, Syria\, and raised in Cleveland\, Ohio\, Al-Hadid creates artworks that speak to her interest in the melding of cultures and the translation of disparate narratives. This monographic exhibition will consist of a selection of 13 sculptural works made between 2010 and 2021 brought into interpretive grouping for the first time. Together the sculptures identify the artist’s investigation of historical\, mythological\, and biblical narratives of women as a fundamental through-line of her practice.\nWhile Al-Hadid’s work is often interpreted primarily in relation to her interest in the art historical canon\, this show situates the artist’s deployment of these influences as advancing a network of feminist concerns: the female protagonist and its conflicted history\, as well as women’s agency\, power\, and identity. The title refers to the artist’s ongoing interest in the incomplete nature of collective history and the palimpsest of narrative and information that constructs our sense of history; it also resists the monumentalizing (and ultimately\, patriarchal and colonialist) idea of fixity and singularity. Instead\, Al-Hadid foregrounds disruption and rupture in the endlessly woven fabric of our stories of self/the body\, the migration of information and interpretation through space and time\, and the fundamentally unfixed nature of human desire.\nThe exhibition is held in conjunction with the Feminist Art Coalition (FAC)\, a nationwide initiative of art projects that seek to generate cultural awareness of feminist thought\, experience\, and action.\nA brochure with a curatorial essay\, alongside installation images\, will accompany the exhibition.

While these people feel grounded and a sense of belonging in their homes where their identities and cultures are very much alive\, they are forced to confront feelings of otherness when they step outside whether it’s through receiving judgmental glances\, harsh words or physical violence. With eyes on the outside\, Middle Easterners who live in other parts of the world experience these struggles indirectly; feeling an instinctive connection to those in the U.S.\, they are affected by what they see and hear on the news or social media. “Home Away From Home” exhibits original work by artists of Middle Eastern descent living in the U.S. and abroad who attempt to explore themes of underrepresentation\, isolation and racism while navigating the physical and emotional disconnect between themselves\, their cultures and the places they call home.

Her graphic novel trilogy\, Shubeik Lubeik\, is an urban fantasy set in Cairo about a world where you can buy and sell wishes. The first volume of the trilogy was awarded Best Graphic Novel and the Grand Prize of the Cairo Comix Festival (2017). All three volumes are published by Dar el Mahrousa in Arabic\, and the English translation of all three volumes combined has been acquired by Pantheon (U.S.) and Granta (U.K.)\, due to be released in 2022. During her residency\, Wafa will be offering talks and tours exclusive to MPP donors and visitors\, furthering her research for her second book\, and developing the embroidery collections of the Museum. \nWafa is an artist\, author and educator (as well as lifelong student) of Palestinian embroidery\, and has invested her life’s work in preserving Palestinian embroidery in the United States and in the diaspora. DESCRIPTION:James Harris Gallery is pleased to present our seventh exhibition by California artist Amir Zaki. Comprised of two bodies of work\, collectively entitled\, “Empty Vessel\,” the series features striking colorful photographs of both skateboard parks and broken ceramic vases. Together\, these images open a discussion of the history and future of photography and duplicitous version of truth in the modern world. In his work\, Zaki strives to disrupt common notions of authenticity\, monumentality\, and documentation through a hybridization of techniques. The two disparate series are connected through real and fictive space illuminating the truth between the everyday and the ideal. Over the last 16 years\, Zaki has pushed the physicality of the photograph’s two dimensional construct\, allowing it to exist on its own and also exploring its own object-ness.   In order to capture and record the original site\, Zaki’s representations depict the complexity of place in terms of interactive evolving experience\, an ongoing ecological intervention. The artist responds to the shifting contemporary landscape where nothing is permanent\, constructing his own visual language to illustrate an entire mythology of place. \nAmir Zaki lives and works in Southern California. He received his MFA from UCLA in 1999 and has been exhibiting nationally and internationally since graduating. He is a full professor at the University of California at Riverside. His work is included in many museum collections including the Hammer Museum of Art\, Los Angeles County Museum of Art\, New Museum of Contemporary Art\, Orange County Museum of Art\, Santa Barbara Museum of Art\, and the Whitney Museum of American Art\, among others.

SUMMARY:Smithsonian: ntroduction to Palestinian Thobe Embroidery: Panel Design
DESCRIPTION:For generations\, Palestinian women have gathered with their daughters to work collectively on embroidery projects\, bonding with one another over a cup of tea. Guided by Wafa Ghnaim\, who began her training in embroidery with her mother at age 2\, learn the history of the traditional Palestinian thobe\, as well as the basic cross-stitch on waste canvas. \nThe skirt of a Palestinian thobe typically features heavily embroidered panels that give the skirt a mural-like quality. The panels can be heavily ornamented for special occasions. \nStudents of all skill levels are introduced to panel patterns and learn how to stitch them onto denim using waste canvas. Waste canvas allows artisans to adorn any piece of cloth or clothing and is an important skill to master in order to create traditional Palestinian embroidered garments. \nThis class combines detailed instruction on how to complete a small panel segment using the Cleopatra design on waste canvas with discussion of the pattern’s meaning and history.

DESCRIPTION:Arabic calligraphy is the artistic practice of handwriting and calligraphy based on the Arabic alphabet. \nHajj Wafaa of Kufa\, Iraq\, is a freelance professional Islamic calligraphist.  He has been teaching Islamic calligraphy classes in Boston since 2004. Haff Wafaa will join us on Wednesday\, March 31 to teach our Arabic calligraphy workshop. \n25 students will receive a free Arabic calligraphy set.  You must be able to attend the Wednesday\, March 31 calligraphy workshop.  If you cannot attend the workshop\, please do not register. \nYou must be logged in to access this form. Log in \nArabic calligraphy is the artistic practice of handwriting and calligraphy based on the Arabic alphabet.
