This artist talk will feature Mary Hazboun\, the Palestinian artist behind “The Art of Weeping\,” a collection of 50+ original drawings currently on show at Museum of the Palestinian People in Washington\, D.C. \nAbout Mary: \nMary Hazboun is a multidisciplinary Chicago-based artist who practices “ The Art of Weeping” as an act of processing grief and somatic healing of bodies through drawing and singing. Mary’s work highlights the nuanced traumas of women and their resistance against different forms of oppression that is manifested in the military machine\, patriarchal societies\, and forced migrations. She uses art\, ceremonies\, and performance for emptying blocked emotions\, opening internal space\, and pouring in trauma-informed introspections as a form of healing. DESCRIPTION:Habib Hajallie was named as the winner of the Robert Walters Group UK New Artist of the Year Award at an awards ceremony held at the prestigious Saatchi Gallery on Thursday 10 November 2022\, and he is also a recipient of the Samuel Ross Black British Artist Grant 2022. \nDuring this online talk\, Habib will talk about his creative practice\, his work with UK New Artist and winning the Robert Walters Group UK New Artist of the Year Award. Habib will also be sharing his top tips for new\, emerging artists that he has learnt on his journey. \nHabib seeks to empower often marginalised minorities through the exploration of identity within his ballpoint pen portraiture. Confronting socio-political issues within his drawings acts as a catalyst for a discourse regarding the perception of various demographics as being of lesser humanistic value. Specifically\, with the disenfranchised often being undermined by mainstream media; somewhat paradoxically reflecting an archaic hierarchy of status\, similar to colonial ideologies. Geological and geographic factors have contributed to its long history of survival and an ideal place for settlement\, making it a source of envy and coveted possession for invaders who have seen Jericho as the key to controlling Palestine. In the oldest continuously inhabited place on earth\, what is the oldest traditional dress worn by the residents? And\, is it still being worn today? \nLearn the answers to these questions\, and more\, at the next installment of SWANA Style Series\, titled “Reviving The Jericho ‘Thobe Ubb’. DESCRIPTION:Following the success of Amado Alfadni’s ‘Alternative Museum of the Sudan’ the exhibition has been extended and will remain on display at Sulger-Buel Gallery until the 31st of August 2022 and viewing is available by appointment only. \nThis solo exhibition highlights Alfadni’s deep research-based investigations into the forgotten silenced histories of the Sudan. The artist utilizes oral archives\, postcards\, photographs\, performances\, and mixed-media costumes to reveal the complex relationship between colonialism and Black Africa\, as well as the intermingled histories of Black Africa\, Egypt\, and North Africa. \nAbout the artist:\nBorn in 1976 in Cairo\, Amado Alfadni’s childhood was composed of two distinct environments: the Cairene Street and the Sudanese home. The relationship and the tension between these two cultures strongly influenced his views\, making him question the subject of identity with its related rhetoric\, as well as the variables of nation and ethnicity in his work. By working with forgotten historical events and referring to the current state of things\, he challenges the power dynamics between the individual and authority on both the social and political levels. He gives a voice to the ethnic minority\, with a focus on research and documentation of ignored happenings. \nAbout the curator:\nNajlaa El-Ageli\, an architect (AA Dip) with over twenty years of experience in the profession\, founded Noon Arts Projects in 2012. A small private arts foundation\, with a mission to bring the best of contemporary art from the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region\, from both emerging and established artists\, and expose it to the world stage. Collaborating with art venues and foundations\, she has curated over 20 exhibitions in the UK\, Spain\, Malta\, Italy\, and the US. \n

SUMMARY:Dreams Rising Artist Talk: Gaza Artists Malak Al-Absy and Mohammed Qraiqe
DESCRIPTION:Palestinian children in the Gaza Strip as young as 14 years old have endured four major Israeli military offensives. They live under an Israeli military blockade which controls who goes where and when\, which goods can enter and exit Gaza\, and which patients can seek specialized health care abroad. And yet\, they are dreaming of a better future. \nThe Museum of the Palestinian People is pleased to introduce a new exhibition that invites visitors to imagine a better future for Palestinian children in Gaza. Working with a team of youth specialists\, curator Ahmed Mansour asked children to paint a vision of their future. \nThe exhibition was envisioned and created in memory of the 67 Palestinian children killed in the May 2021 Israeli military offensive on the Gaza Strip. The exhibition features artwork created by 11 child and youth artists in Gaza in collaboration with Sama Center for Art and Culture. \nThis event is a conversation with two of the young artists featured in the exhibition: 16-year-old Malak Al-Absy and 21-year-old Mohammed Qraiqe. The event will be moderated by Ahmed Mansour\, the curator of Dreams Rising and the director of programs at the Museum of the Palestinian people. \nMalak Al-Absy\, 16\, is a Palestinian artist from Gaza who was born in 2006\, the year before the Israeli blockade closed the Gaza Strip to the rest of the world. Malak has lived through four major Israeli military offensives in the 2008\, 2012\, 2014\, and 2021. She started to paint from a young age and has participated in several local art exhibits in Gaza City. Through art\, Malak tries to explore the idea of love in the war-torn Gaza. \nMohammed Qraiqe\, 21\, is from the Shujaiya neighborhood in Gaza City. His talent as an artist emerged when he was five years old. He was adopted by several art institutes in Gaza before he started making his way to international exhibits. Mohammed has toured Dubai\, Tunis\, Lebanon\, and Chicago with his art. He’s currently finishing his Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science at a university in Norway.

DESCRIPTION:Event Description: Dr. Reem El Mutwalli and Heike Weber\, Embroiderer & Author had a very special conversation earlier in March. To be released on Tuesday\, 5th April. \nHeike recently exhibited at Dubai Expo 2020\, and launched her book documenting the history of embroidery in the Levant region titled “Anat and her hero Baal – The embroidery language of The Levant”. \nWhen Heike Weber arrived in Syria in 1982\, seeking refuge from the Lebanese civil war\, she fell in love with the country’s capital Damascus.During the years of war\, she braved the mortars and shelling that left their marks on the walls of her home located in a narrow alleyway in the heart of Damascus old city.Now 70\, the German woman vowed to not leave the country and she said she feels a sense of duty to the country she has called home for decades.Married to a Palestinian\, Weber started her life in the Yarmouk camp\, near Damascus\, where she followed her passion for embroidery. The\nexhibition represents expressions from life in Gaza by six Palestinian artists\, whose works defy a brutal Israeli blockade imposed on over two million Palestinians. Crossing states’ boundaries and aerial spaces to reach Turtle Island\, the works affirm Palestinian hope\,\npersistence\, endurance\, and love of art and life. The two hundred drawings and\npaintings are a testament of the power of art\, the power of imagination under bombardment\, and aspiration for a just and peaceful life in a forsaken world.\nMaking art in Gaza is an act of survival\, refusal\, and resistance to unendurable conditions\ninflicted on Palestinians in the largest collective prison on earth. Deprivation of the Palestinian artists in Gaza from their right to freedom of movement\, their right to connect with the rest of the art community and the public in colonized Palestine and beyond has not stopped them from making art. DESCRIPTION:Virtual event\nFREE with RSVP \nJoin multimedia artist Alia Ali and musician/composer Tarek Yamani as the two artists of different disciplines interview one another\, discover unexpected connections\, and discuss each of their newest projects commissioned by UMS and AANM. \nAlia Ali (Arabic: عاليه علي // Sabean: ‎ 𐩲𐩱𐩡𐩺𐩲|𐩲𐩱𐩡) is a Yemeni-Bosnian-US multi-media artist. A child of migrant linguists\, Ali has traveled to sixty-seven countries\, lived in and between seven\, and grown-up among five languages. Her migrations have led her to process the world through interactive experiences and the belief that the damage of translation and interpretation of written language has dis-served particular communities\, resulting in the threat of their exclusion\, rather than a means of understanding. As an artist who exists on the borders of identifying as West Asian\, Eastern European\, a United States citizen\, queer\, culturally Muslim yet spiritually independent\, her work explores cultural binaries\, challenges culturally sanctioned oppression\, and confronts the dualistic barriers of conflicted notions of gender\, politics\, media\, and citizenship. Through her practice\, Ali critiques linguistics and inherited political structures and narratives\, while simultaneously attempting to counter the polarization and miscommunication that imperils communities across the world\, encouraging viewers to confront their own prejudices. \nTarek Yamani is an American-Lebanese New York-based composer and a self-taught jazz pianist dedicated to exploring relationships between African-American Jazz and Arabic rhythms/maqams. He is the recipient of awards such as the Givanas Foundation Grant\, Huygens Scholarship\, Andrea Elkenbracht Award\, Prins Bernhard Culture Fund\, Thelonious Monk Composers Competition Prize\, Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Residency\, New Dutch Composition Contest\, and Composer’s Platform Commission by the Abu Dhabi Festival. Tarek has been recently commissioned by UMS (Ann Arbor) to write a new piece for the genre-bending Spektral Quartet to be premiered on October 27th\, as part of the UMS Digital Artist Residency.

SUMMARY:Diana Al-Hadid: Archive of Longings:  Exhibition at the Henry Art Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Diana Al-Hadid’s work explores the interplay between the female body and the European art canon; Syrian\, Muslim\, and immigrant histories and mythologies; and architectural icons and the natural world. Born in 1981 in Aleppo\, Syria\, and raised in Cleveland\, Ohio\, Al-Hadid creates artworks that speak to her interest in the melding of cultures and the translation of disparate narratives. This monographic exhibition will consist of a selection of 13 sculptural works made between 2010 and 2021 brought into interpretive grouping for the first time. Together the sculptures identify the artist’s investigation of historical\, mythological\, and biblical narratives of women as a fundamental through-line of her practice.\nWhile Al-Hadid’s work is often interpreted primarily in relation to her interest in the art historical canon\, this show situates the artist’s deployment of these influences as advancing a network of feminist concerns: the female protagonist and its conflicted history\, as well as women’s agency\, power\, and identity. The title refers to the artist’s ongoing interest in the incomplete nature of collective history and the palimpsest of narrative and information that constructs our sense of history; it also resists the monumentalizing (and ultimately\, patriarchal and colonialist) idea of fixity and singularity. Instead\, Al-Hadid foregrounds disruption and rupture in the endlessly woven fabric of our stories of self/the body\, the migration of information and interpretation through space and time\, and the fundamentally unfixed nature of human desire.\nThe exhibition is held in conjunction with the Feminist Art Coalition (FAC)\, a nationwide initiative of art projects that seek to generate cultural awareness of feminist thought\, experience\, and action.\nA brochure with a curatorial essay\, alongside installation images\, will accompany the exhibition.
