SUMMARY:Moorish Splendors - Online Art Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Alhambra Palace is a remarkable work of architecture adorned with tiled geometric mosaics\, biomorphic carving and calligraphy. Learn how to construct a geometric pattern using a compass and ruler and paint with watercolor. \nWorkshop includes illustrated handouts with step-by-step instructions and recording of class. \nREGISTER HERE $35 \n  \n\n\nAmina Quraishi is an artist and art educator based in Seattle\, Washington. Her work is inspired by the beauty of traditional Islamic art and nature. She received an Honors Bachelors of Science majoring in Psychology and an Advanced Diploma in Art & Art History at the University of Toronto. With the focus mostly on European art movements she began to wonder what about art in other parts of the world. Going back to her roots as a Muslim\, she felt a personal connection to the rich cultural and artistic history of the Islamic lands. She began studying and practicing Islamic art and architecture using traditional tools. \nAmina has been teaching Islamic art since 2017. She hopes by sharing her love and fascination of Islamic art will work towards awareness and inclusion in art education.

SUMMARY:4.3 DIALOGUES ON THE ART OF ARAB FASHION: MY LIFE’S PASSION
DESCRIPTION:4.3 DIALOGUES ON THE ART OF ARAB FASHION: MY LIFE’S PASSION\nEvent Description: Widad Kawar is the founder of the Tiraz Centre in Amman\, Jordan\, home to the biggest collection of Palestinian\, Jordanian\, and Arab traditional dress in the world\, and the author of Threads of Identity\, a record of Palestinian dress and the women who made and wore it. With her childhood and youth spent in Bethlehem and Ramallah\, Widad was surrounded by traditional Palestinian weaving and embroidery. The war and displacement in Palestine encouraged her to collect not only the items but the stories and legacies of the women who lost their homes and their culture. For Widad\, each item in her collection is a reminder of a person\, a place\, and an event. Her knowledge stems from the personal stories of the women who made and worn these dresses.   \nDate: 16th February 2021 \nTime: 11 am NYC\, 4 pm London\, 8 pm Dubai \nTickets: Donation \nStudents: If you are a student or member of academia please register here to receive your complimentary registration links. \nRegistering will not only give you access to the live session but also a recorded version to catch up on in your own time. \nBuy Tickets

SUMMARY:Smithsonian Sampler Series: Tatreez
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM DESCRIPTION \nFor generations\, Palestinian women have gathered with their daughters to work collectively on embroidery projects\, bonding with one another over a cup of tea. Guided by Wafa Ghnaim\, who began her training in embroidery with her mother at age 2\, learn the basic Palestinian cross-stitch and how to create a tatreez sampler\, using a standard size sheet of Aida cloth fabric and one that can incorporate numerous patterns and eventually become a wall-hanging. \nIf you have already begun a tatreez sampler\, this workshop will teach you traditional patterns and stitching strategies to further develop your piece. You are not required to take all three workshops in this winter series (Jan. 29; Feb. 26; and March 12)—you may take one\, or all. The purpose of the sampler series is to develop your stitching skills\, introduce you to new patterns throughout the region’s history\, as well as learn more about textiles produced in the Holy Land throughout the centuries. \nOpen to students of all skill levels\, learn the history and meaning behind traditional Palestinian patterns\, basics of transferring a pattern to fabric\, threading a needle\, various cross-stitching methodologies\, how to keep the back of your cloth clean\, color theory and design\, project planning\, and motif repetition. No experience is required. \n Download the supply list for this class
