SUMMARY:Mary Ann Peters: myself inside your story
DESCRIPTION:An artist and activist for five decades\, Mary Ann Peters’ drawings\, paintings\, and sculptural installations address the incomplete histories of the Middle East. A second-generation Lebanese American woman\, Peters is simultaneously connected to and distanced from a family homeland known to her through generations of stories\, photographs\, and lived experiences\, as well as her travels abroad\, and – like many of us – from news sources.  As the title of exhibition hints\, Peters makes reference to histories that are not her story but are\, by heritage\, a connection to documented cultural records tied to the Middle East.

SUMMARY:FIELD TRIP: 4-DAY QUILLISASCUT FARM CAMP
DESCRIPTION:This summer we’re teaming up with Quillisascut for another round of farm camp! Located in Rice\, Washington\, Quillisascut is a rural farmstead that includes livestock\, a small orchard and extensive gardens that supply the ingredients that nourish the farmers and guests. Every summer they invite guests to the farm for culinary workshops\, where you’ll spend your days milking goats\, making goat cheese\, feeding\, slaughtering\, and butchering chickens\, gathering eggs\, harvesting garden vegetables and herbs\, and foraging. Out of your day’s adventures\, you’ll create meals that will include wood-fired sourdough bread\, fresh-made yogurt\, fruit jam\, wood-oven rotisserie chicken\, herbal infusions\, wood-fired pizza\, and so much more. On top of that\, you will learn how to improvise meals based on what you harvest each day from the farm and have additional options in the farm garden to learn about local flowers\, crack walnuts from the renowned tree\, or try your hand at fermentation projects in the back kitchen. \nThis 4-day camp led by Nadia Tommalieh and the Quillisascut family will take place July 24-27 and again on September 25 -28. Lodging is included and will be in either the farm’s clubhouse\, the shepherds hut\, or the glamping tent. There are four shared bathrooms with showers. Camping is also an option for those who want to sleep under the stars. Payment plans are an option\, so please send an email to info@thepantryseattle.com if that works better for you. \nQuillisascut Farm Camp is geared for adults. Young adults can sometimes be accommodated as an exception based on their age level and interest (as well as must be accompanied by a parent or guardian). Please email to check in with us first if you have anyone under the age of 18 in your party.

SUMMARY:Tatreez in Conversation: Six Dresses\, Six Stories
DESCRIPTION:Tatreez in Conversation: Six Dresses\, Six Stories\n\nDate: Thursday\, September 25\, 2025\nTime: 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM EST\nLocation: Online\, Zoom link will be emailed 24 hours prior to event\nInstructor: Wafa Ghnaim\, Dress Historian\, Researcher & Educator\nRegistration Fee: Sliding scale\, starting at $10 \nDescription: Until the mid-twentieth century\, the dress of the Palestinian people was descriptive of identity; first by societal segment (city dweller\, villager or nomad)\, and then by the region in which the wearer came. Within each regional style\, finer distinctions in women’s dress (thobe) were expressed that shared the maker’s life and the natural world around her. Palestinian women recorded their identity in their thobe with embroidery (tatreez) through a shared illustrative language of embroidered patterns\, stitching techniques and thread colors. \nAfter al-Nakba and throughout the 1960s\, the thobe transformed into a reflection of national identity. It no longer signified a woman’s village\, tribe\, or town\, her marital status\, or her familial lineage\, but instead bore the material impact of colonialism\, occupation\, war\, and exile. While the loss of regional identity in dress is registered as part of the violence Palestinians endured during al-Nakba\, this shift also marks a moment of unity in Palestinian communities newly dispersed and scattered across the region. The six-branch dress\, a dress construction that became a governing style by the 1960s\, showcases innovative approaches by women at the time to protect a vital component to Palestinian cultural heritage. \nThis lecture will focus on the six dresses presented in Tatreez Inheritance\, examining their material characteristics\, their paths to the United States\, and the ways in which one can employ the art of “close looking”—a skill Wafa learned from her mother at a young age—to uncover evidence of a woman’s personality\, vocation\, life\, and sense of pride.

SUMMARY:Seffarine (in Vancouver)
DESCRIPTION:The 35th Edition of the Vancouver International Flamenco Festival\, co-presented with Caravan World Rhythms\, proudly presents: \nThe sounds that stir the dry winds of Southern Spain and Morocco\, two countries separated by only a whisper of the Mediterranean\, are the musical DNA of a beautifully complex extended family linking North Africa and Europe. \nBorn in the ancient city of Fes\, Morocco\, internationally acclaimed singer Lamiae Naki and her ensemble Seffarine channel their deep knowledge of the music of both sides of the Straits of Gibraltar\, the crossroad where African\, Middle Eastern and European cultures meet. \nThe musicians of Seffarine\, soulful Moroccan singer Lamiae Naki and flamenco guitarist Nat Hulskamp\, supported by master musicians from diverse cultural backgrounds\, embrace and expand this rich musical legacy. Their dynamic performances seamlessly blend Moroccan and Arabic Andalusian music. These diverse backgrounds meld\, creating what SoundRoots describes as “an ear-caressing blend of sounds from Spain and North Africa\, spiced with a bit of fiery instrumentation and percussion.” \nTheir sound reflects Lamiae’s deep roots in Arabic Andalusian traditions (dating back to pre-Inquisition Moorish Spain and preserved in her native Morocco) and Nat’s background in flamenco guitar and Arabic oud. They are joined by Spanish flamenco dancer Manuel Gutierrez\, known for his explosive flamenco footwork; Cuban born flamenco bassist Yosmel Montejo\, whose grooving basslines drive the rhythm; and Persian multi-instrumentalist Bobak Salehi\, who brings delicate kamancheh ornamentation to the ensemble. \nTheir sound has taken them around the world\, from touring Indonesia and Europe to receiving grants to study Ottoman singing in Turkey\, to recording with top flamenco musicians in Spain such as Diego del Morao and Latin Grammy Award winner Antonio Rey.
