SUMMARY:Mary Ann Peters: the edge becomes the center
DESCRIPTION:The following description comes from the event organizer. \nSeattle artist Mary Ann Peters (born 1949\, Beaumont\, Texas) has attended to overlooked narratives for almost forty years\, interpreting her research through mediums including painting\, sculpture\, and installation. Peters unearths hidden diasporic histories\, often through travel\, and contextualizes them within her experiences of the contemporary Middle East as a second-generation Lebanese American. the edge becomes the center brings together the artist’s series this trembling turf for the first time and presents it alongside a new installation—works that together surface the ways forgotten and repressed pasts shape present experience. \nthis trembling turf features ten abstract drawings\, including one from the Frye’s collection\, which the artist crafts by applying thin strokes of white ink to black clayboard. The series interprets natural habitats where activity occurs beneath the surface\, with rhythmic patterns referencing sound waves used by archaeologists to uncover buried traces of civilization. These intricate drawings imagine the missing records of populations and cultures physically covered over\, reminding us that forgotten histories could be buried below us\, lost within our collective memory. \nThe exhibition’s new site-specific installation continues the artist’s ongoing impossible monuments series\, works of disparate materials and forms that memorialize disregarded details of socio-political events. Peters writes\, “I define an impossible monument as something that deserves reverence but by virtue of its incidental nature would never be elevated to the status of a monument.” Together\, these bodies of work ask viewers to consider which narratives are written into history and which are erased.

SUMMARY:Letter Writing to Palestinian Prisoners
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Cal Anderson Park near the Farmer’s Market 12pm – 3pm (drop in any time) to write letters to Palestinian prisoners incarcerated by the Zionist occupation. Given META repression of the Palestine movement and Samidoun\, our Instagram and FB accounts have been taken down. Spread the word for this event and follow us on Telegram! \nIn response to the call to make August 3rd\, the 300th day of the ongoing siege on Gaza\, International Day of Action for Gaza and the Prisoners\, we hope to come together in solidarity with the prisoners’ struggle. Zionist prisons are known for torture\, starvation\, and abuse\, and used by occupation forces in futile attempts to break the Palestinian spirit and the resistance\, but the Palestinian Prisoners’ Movement remains on the frontline of the liberation struggle. \nNo experience needed – bring yourself\, friends\, comrades\, and your belief that we will soon win a Free Palestine. \nLong live the Palestinian Resistance and Free Palestine!

SUMMARY:Seattle Arab Film Festival: Love and Revolt
DESCRIPTION:Ten compelling shorts from a remarkable group of emerging and established filmmakers\n“Love & Revolt\,” the 5th edition of the Seattle Arab Film Festival (SAFF)\, is a celebration of the rebellious spirit of Arab stories despite the pain of oppression. \nTo address the horrifying injustices that continue to be inflicted on Palestinians in Gaza\, and the non-stop efforts to erase their narrative\, SAFF will be featuring films labeled “Made in Palestine\,” including An Orange from Jaffa\, recipient of the Grand Prize at the 2024 Clermont-Ferrand Film Festival and The Key\, which premiered at SXSW Film Festival. \nThe screenings will be divided in two sections – “Parallel Time” and “A Place Without A Door\,” both titles inspired by the work of the late Palestinian author Walid Daqqa – separated by a brief intermission. Each film program is a similar balance of themes: From Egypt to New York\, young people experiment with gender roles and their sexual desires despite gatekeepers\, while in Algeria and Morocco\, estranged families and angry couples are brought together by the sea. The lineup consists of a total of ten short films from the US and the Arab world\, both live-action and animation\, and featuring themes of love\, family and exile.
