SUMMARY:Iraqi Young Leaders Exchange Program (IYLEP)
DESCRIPTION:The Iraqi Young Leaders Exchange Program (IYLEP) for high school and undergraduate students is a program sponsored and funded by the US Embassy\, Baghdad and U.S. Department of State\, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs\, Youth Programs Division. Students are selected by the U.S. Embassy through a competitive application process. During the program\, 15 students will develop leadership skills\, learn about U.S. history and culture\, and build a network of emerging leaders. FIUTS produces a 2-week portion of the 3-week program through a contract with World Learning\, and the program is fully funded by the U. S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs \nStudents arrive in Seattle on July 28th and stay until August 10th. \n  \n\n  \nGet Involved\nAll high school and university students in the Seattle area can get involved in the IYLEP program by applying to be an IYLEP Ambassador. Ambassadors are a critical piece of the program and act as peer mentors\, cultural liaisons\, friends and student leaders. SUSI Ambassadors learn new skills\, build their resume\, make international friends and have fun! University students will be matched with the adult mentors coming on this program. Apply to be an Ambassador here. \nIf you have questions about the Ambassador program\, please contact FIUTS Program Specialist: Education Programs\, Nada Ramadan\, at nada@fiuts.org. \nCommunity Members\nCommunity Members are invited to host one or more IYLEP participants for one week. The Homestay is the entirety of the program from July 28th to August 10th. Homestay is an important opportunity for participants to learn about U.S. culture and connect with local people. On the final evening\, all hosts are invited to join us for dinner to celebrate the program and enjoy cultural presentations from student participants. Please contact jason@fiuts.org for information about hosting a IYLEP participant.  Getting involved as a community member is a great way to make a positive impact and build meaningful connections.

SUMMARY:The Journey of Culture\, Part 1: The Silk Road: Bothell Cultural Night
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, July 28th | 6 – 9 p.m. | City Hall Plaza & 101st Ave NE\nEvent Overview: The Journey of Culture\, Part 1: The Silk Road\nIncorporating the tenets of our 2023 Cultural Focus\, Lagom\, NW Folklife presents “The Journey of Culture.” Lagom\, a Scandinavian term\, specific to Swedish culture\, signifies balance. Not too much\, not too little\, just right. To find that balance requires adjustment and acclimatization to your surroundings and the people you encounter along the way. That balance is a journey.   \nThe global evolution and expansion of cultural ideas and expressions are\, in no small part\, a by-product of commerce\, trade routes\, and people’s capacity and energies to swap\, barter\, and exchange goods and services. These transactions weren’t limited to commodities but necessarily included dialogue in music\, language\, art\, and dance. \nThe Silk Road\, which stretched from China to the Mediterranean Sea\, connecting myriad cultures through the Eurasian continent\, was one of the first transnational trade routes connecting people from vastly disparate lands and cultures. Join us for an evening that celebrates the merging and mixing of cultures across lands far and wide as we bring music\, craft\, and food from across the continents of Asia\, Africa\, and Europe.   \nPerformances on July 28th\, 2023 will include:\n\nInochi Taiko (Japan Taiko Drumming)\nZJE Music (Mongolian Multi-Instrumental Musical Band)\nAlefba Choir (Iranian Choir)\nGeorge Sadak Band (Egyptian Tabla Player – Dumbek)\nBulgarian Voices of Seattle Women’s Choir. (Bulgarian Choir)\nOleaje Flamenco (Flamenco Music and Dance)\n\nVendors on July 28th\, 2023 will include:\nAlFarid Handmade Accessories\, Celestial Attire\, Dyme Designs\, Emmila\, Hana Naturals\, Lunaraya\, Mazart Gallery\, Nature’s Element Co.\, Nísh René LLC\, Oddleee Enuff by Sylvia\, Patisserie De Zee\, Reham’s Cake Gallery\, Silkin\, The Lucky Charm\, Tresses Essentials\, and Zahira Studio. \n\nFree Community Event\nThere is provided outdoor seating; bringing low-back chairs is welcomed.\nThere will be performances\, vendors\, and activities.\nParking: There is a public gravel parking lot on the corner of SR522 & Bothell Way NE\, and there is free public parking at the City Hall Parking Garage.
