SUMMARY:Diana Al-Hadid: Archive of Longings: Exhibition at the Henry Art Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Diana Al-Hadid’s work explores the interplay between the female body and the European art canon; Syrian\, Muslim\, and immigrant histories and mythologies; and architectural icons and the natural world. Born in 1981 in Aleppo\, Syria\, and raised in Cleveland\, Ohio\, Al-Hadid creates artworks that speak to her interest in the melding of cultures and the translation of disparate narratives. This monographic exhibition will consist of a selection of 13 sculptural works made between 2010 and 2021 brought into interpretive grouping for the first time. Together the sculptures identify the artist’s investigation of historical\, mythological\, and biblical narratives of women as a fundamental through-line of her practice.\nWhile Al-Hadid’s work is often interpreted primarily in relation to her interest in the art historical canon\, this show situates the artist’s deployment of these influences as advancing a network of feminist concerns: the female protagonist and its conflicted history\, as well as women’s agency\, power\, and identity. The title refers to the artist’s ongoing interest in the incomplete nature of collective history and the palimpsest of narrative and information that constructs our sense of history; it also resists the monumentalizing (and ultimately\, patriarchal and colonialist) idea of fixity and singularity. Instead\, Al-Hadid foregrounds disruption and rupture in the endlessly woven fabric of our stories of self/the body\, the migration of information and interpretation through space and time\, and the fundamentally unfixed nature of human desire.\nThe exhibition is held in conjunction with the Feminist Art Coalition (FAC)\, a nationwide initiative of art projects that seek to generate cultural awareness of feminist thought\, experience\, and action.\nA brochure with a curatorial essay\, alongside installation images\, will accompany the exhibition.

SUMMARY:Route 181: Fragments of a Journey In Palestine-Israel\, a three-part film
DESCRIPTION:To kick off the winter 2022 season\, we present Route 181: Fragments of a Journey In Palestine-Israel\, a three-part film with a focus on daily life in Palestine. \nIn the summer of 2002\, Eyal Sivan and Michel Khleifi travel together from the south to the north of their country of birth; they traced their trajectory on a map and called it ROUTE 181. This virtual line follows the borders outlined in Resolution 181\, which was adopted by the United Nations in 1947 to partition Palestine into two states. \nAs they travel\, Khleifi and Sivan meet a multitude of characters\, each of which has their own way of evoking the frontiers that separate them from their neighbors: concrete\, barbed-wire\, cynicism\, humor\, indifference\, suspicion\, aggression; frontiers have been built on the hills and in the plains\, on mountains and in valleys but above all\, in the collective unconscious of both societies. \nJAN 26–30\, 2022\nPART ONE: THE SOUTH\n\nFrom Ashdod to Gaza. Sivan and Khleifi begin their cinematic journey through the southern parts of Palestine-Israel\, interviewing a juice seller\, a candy seller\, an engineer\, and a manager\, gaining perspectives from Israelis and Palestinians about everyday life. They visit a kibbutz\, travel to Gaza\, and hear residents’ understandings of the Zionist project alongside discussions of Palestinians’ right to return. Their task as filmmakers is to document\, to convey what is desired and what is experienced\, to distinguish people’s dreams from political projects\, to hear what one wants to forget\, and to listen to the other–this is how the journey begins.\n\n\nScreening IN-PERSON at Trylon Cinema on Wednesday\, Jan 26\, 2022 at 7pm. TICKETS\n\nAvailable VIRTUALLY Jan 27–30\, 2022 in the US ONLY. TICKETS

SUMMARY:Hotter Than Egypt
DESCRIPTION:ACT – A CONTEMPORARY THEATRE\nin association with\nMARIN THEATRE COMPANY\npresents \nHotter Than Egypt\nDates: January 28-February 20\, 2022\nRun time: TBD\nLocation: Allen Theatre \nACT proudly presents Hotter than Egypt\, its 50th world premiere by Core Company member and Seattle playwright Yussef El Guindi in a co-production with the Marin Theatre Company in California. Hotter than Egypt is a poignant play about personal revelation. Paul and Jean\, an American couple\, travel to Cairo for their 24th wedding anniversary. Long-dormant troubles within the marriage start to percolate\, and their two Egyptian tour guides\, newly engaged Maha and Seif\, become drawn into the crisis. This dramedy set in the aftermath of the Egyptian revolution explores the uneven power dynamics between these Western tourists and the locals. Dreams and relationships are put to the test when old connections lead to new temptations. Hotter than Egypt\, recently workshopped through the ACT Local program\, is a vivid new work from the acclaimed author of Threesome\, Ramayana\, and People of the Book.
