Nada Elia and Alice Rothchild have published books in the last year that focus on Palestine/Israel in two very different ways. Alice’s is a young-adult novel, while Nada’s is a nonfiction exploration and analysis. What the books have in common, in addition to their Palestine/Israel focus, is awakening to injustice. One is a personal awakening, the other is intersectional — an exploration of the connected and intertwined social fabric. These two writers, one Palestinian and one Jewish, explore ways to move forward.
Nada Elia is a diaspora Palestinian writer, grassroots organizer, and university professor. She is a core member of the Palestinian Feminist Collective and has been the plenary presenter at major conferences such as the US Campaign for Palestinian Rights. Her articles have been published in Mondoweiss, Middle East Eye, and Electronic Intifada amongst many other places. Nada’s new book is Greater than the Sum of Our Parts: Feminism, Inter/Nationalism, and Palestine.
Alice Rothchild has written three books on Israel/Palestine, contributed to newspapers, magazines, webzines, anthologies and poetry journals, and directed a documentary film. After years as a physician, when she is not making good trouble, she loves hiking in the Pacific Northwest, playing with her grandchildren, tending to her boisterous garden, and stretching the boundaries of her cooking. Alice’s new book is Finding Melody Sullivan.
