Guitar legend Marc Ribot has released 25 albums over a 40-year career. As part of Town Hall’s Global Rhythms series, Ribot takes the stage alongside Vancouver’s culture-blending band Haram, whose work draws inspiration from legendary Egyptian singer Umm Kulthoum. Together they create a new sonically breathtaking view of time-tested repertoire.
Ribot is joined onstage by Haram, a Vancouver-based group led by Juno Award-winning oud virtuoso and guitarist Gordon Grdina. Haram filters Arabic music through the creative lens of improvisation, paying homage to the masters while still freely developing an original voice. Classics from Farid El Atrache, Oum Khalsoum, Iraqi folk songs, and 50’s Sudanese radio music all resonate and inspire the ensemble to dig deeper and give more freely. Listen in for a double-billed performance showcase as Ribot teams up with Haram to navigate Arabic musical traditions.
