“The Evolution of Palestinian Symbolism” is an 8-part art historical lecture series detailing the various stages of motif symbolism and ritual in Palestinian society, spanning hundreds of years into history. The motifs are divided into categories of ancient, traditional, curvilinear, contemporary and political. The primary objectives of this course are to; 1) understand the iconographical approach to studying art history and it’s limitations in Palestinian embroidery, 2) the evolution of motifs throughout time, 3) learning the evolutionary context of motifs throughout time, 4) the use of each symbol and the significance of its meaning in Palestinian culture, and 5) the contemporary context of Palestinian embroidery, and an appropriate way to use symbolism in your study.
